Crianças e jovens são exploradas sexualmente pelo mundo. A Organização Internacional do Trabalho estima que mais de 4.000 crianças estão submetidas ao comércio sexual na região da Tríplice Fronteira entre Argentina, Brasil e Paraguai. Este trabalho teve como objetivo investigar como meninas e meninos vivenciam a exploração sexual nessa região de fronteira e como significam essas práticas em suas trajetórias de vida. O interesse por este tema surgiu a partir da escuta e experiência profissional no Programa Sentinela e no trabalho como psicóloga em abrigos de Santa Catarina e Paraná. Para compreender a implicação dos lugares de exploração sexual da Tríplice Fronteira na trajetória de crianças e jovens, o método escolhido foi o etnográfico, priorizando a escuta e a observação destes lugares. Nas falas de meninos e meninas ficou evidenciada a violência sexual familiar, as condições precárias de vida e o desejo de mobilidade social, como fatores para a entrada no comércio sexual. Esta atividade se constitui em estratégia de sobrevivência e de busca de afeto pelo desamparo e a vulnerabilidade humana que, em determinadas condições sociais, têm efeitos exacerbados. A fronteira entre os países dificulta o acesso e a intervenção do Estado nos lugares de exploração sexual. No entanto, as instituições de cuidado foram apontadas pelos/as entrevistadas/os como lugares que, muitas vezes, reatualizam a violência e estigmatizam as crianças em vez de lhes oferecer proteção. O grande desafio é tornar as conseqüências destas vivências menos estigmatizantes, por intervenções profissionais e institucionais mais cuidadosas, seguras e respeitosas. As situações de extrema vulnerabilidade e desproteção vivenciadas pelas meninas e rapazes que contaram suas histórias, apontam para a urgência de mudanças estruturais nos países que se encontram nestas fronteiras, cujas políticas públicas de proteção às crianças e adolescentes não têm sido suficientes e eficazes para impedir o comércio sexual de corpos infantis e para oportunizar condições que propiciem alternativas de sobrevivência às famílias, crianças e jovens que neles vivem. Children and youngsters are sexually exploited all around the world. The International Labor Organization estimates that more than 4.000 children are being submitted to the sex trade in the Triple Frontier Area between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. This project has the objective of investigating how boys and girls experience sexual exploitation in the border region and the meaning of these practices in their life's journey. Interest in this subject came from hearing sessions and professional experience in the "Sentinel Program" and from work as psychologist in shelters in Santa Catarina and Paraná. To understand the implications of sexual exploitation in places on the Triple Frontier Area on the life of children and youngsters, the chosen method was ethnography, prioritizing hearing sessions and observation in those places. In the boy's and girl's accounts family sexual violence, precarious life conditions and the desire for social mobility became evident as factors for their involvement in the sex trade. This activity itself constitutes a survival strategy and a search for affection because of the abandonment and human vulnerability which in certain social conditions has aggravated effects. The border between the countries makes State intervention in the sites where sexual exploitation occurs difficult. However, care institutions were pointed by the interviewed as places that, many times, refresh the violence and stigmatize children instead of offering protection. The biggest challenge is to reduce the stigma of this experience, through more careful, safe, and respectful professional and institutional intervention. The extreme vulnerability and lack of protection experienced by boys and girls who told their stories, point to the urgency of structural changes in countries located at these borders, where public policy towards the protection of children and youngsters is not sufficient and efficient enough to hinder the sex trade of infantile bodies and to create conditions for providing survival alternatives for the families, children and youngsters who live there.

A chamada “crise dos refugiados” desencadeou a corrida às fronteiras por parte dos meios de comunicação social. São estes que, através da sua própria perspetiva, divulgam através de imagens os acontecimentos, criando consequentemente uma representação dos “refugiados” através dessas mesmas imagens. A tendência representativa deste fenómeno assenta numa perspetiva monocular, que influencia a opinião coletiva, vincando a relação entre o “eu” e o “outro”. Uma primeira pessoa fotografa para uma segunda pessoa sobre uma terceira pessoa. Neste sentido, a perspetiva monocular chama à discussão o olhar panótico de Michel Foucault, pois a terceira pessoa, o “refugiado”, é vista sem ter a oportunidade de ver, sem ter a oportunidade de se “defender” da representação que lhe é atribuída. Como consequência, a constante reprodução de imagens torna o fenómeno universal aos olhos de quem as vê. Esta regularidade fomenta a banalização do fenómeno, evocando na opinião coletiva a aceitação e, posteriormente, a perpetuação da Bare-Life. O objetivo da presente investigação é o de, recorrendo à pesquisa etnográfica, identificar as principais características desta representação e aferir da sua coincidência com a autorrepresentação dos refugiados e de outros que estiveram em alguns dos principais palcos da chamada ‘crise de refugiados’.

Kaiowcide: Living through the Guarani-Kaiowa Genocide is an analysis of the genocidal violence perpetrated against indigenous peoples in Brazil and towards the Guarani-Kaiowa. The ongoing indigenous genocide is defined as “Kaiowcide,” in place since the 1970s, when the Guarani-Kaiowa mobilized a reaction to land grabbing and oppression in the final years of the military dictatorship. The book is based on years of research on the agribusiness frontiers, on the indigenous geography of the Guarani-Kaiowa, and on sustained engagement with indigenous communities. Instead of merely describing the genocidal tragedy, the focus is on the life through genocide and trying to collectively go beyond it. One of the main contributions is to provide a robust interpretative analysis of the causes and the ramifications of the genocidal experience lived by the Guarani-Kaiowa. Rather than focusing on formalist notions of “direct intent” by settlers and governments, as a prerequisite for the tagging as genocide, this book emphasizes the destructive potential of the actors actively involved in agrarian capitalist transformations promoted by the national state in socio-economic frontiers.

The third volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress "The Many Languages of Comparative Literature" includes contributions that focus on the interplay between concepts of nation, national languages, and individual as well as collective identities. Because all literary communication happens within different kinds of power structures - linguistic, economic, political -, it often results in fascinating forms of hybridity. In the first of four thematic chapters, the papers investigate some of the ways in which discourses can establish modes of thinking, or how discourses are in turn controlled by active linguistic interventions, whether in the context of the patriarchy, war, colonialism, or political factions. The second thematic block is predominantly concerned with hybridity as an aspect of modern cultural identity, and the cultural and linguistic dimensions of domestic life and in society at large. Closely related, a third series of papers focuses on writers and texts analysed from the vantage points of exile and exophony, as well as theoretical contributions to issues of terminology and what it means to talk about transcultural phenomena. Finally, a group of papers sheds light on more overtly violent power structures, mechanisms of exclusion, Totalitarianism, torture, and censorship, but also resistance to these forms of oppression.
