While the themes, sources, and materials of The Palladian Landscape span a range of disciplinary interests from art and architectural studies, economic, social, and environmental history, to philosophy and Renaissance humanism, Denis Cosgrove seeks to provide a geographical interpretation of a region of northern Italy in the specific period of the late Renaissance. However, he goes much further, using the thoughts, designs, and commissions of the architect Palladio as the central thread to weave a picture of a place, Venice, that is in a period of crisis as it seeks to survive a transition from a maritime power hinterland to a new land-based terraferma. As a cultural geographer, he seeks to understand how groups come to terms with and transform their material environments, and he therefore pays special attention to the intellectual forces and spiritual sensibilities that empower those groups as well as to the economic, social, and environmental constraints with which they have to contend. Although these two broad realms of human experience are often studied separately, Cosgrove brings them together in this study. He uses the leitmotif of architecture, and specifically the work of Andrea Palladio, to describe a localized transformation of the natural world into a landscape of expression of cultural meaning. Beyond this leitmotif, the work adopts an essay structure in which each chapter stands somewhat separately as a spatial narrative. It moves from the imperial city of Venice into its Italian territories, and thence from city to rural landscape to specific country estates. Having described localized transformations of urban and rural landscapes, Cosgrove then expands the scale again to consider hydrological engineering in the Venetian territories and some of the techniques involved in surveying and mapping the landscape. These return the reader to the more global view of a Venetian mentalite coming to terms with a changing geographical and historical world map.

The Embodied Image The Embodied Image: Imagination and Imagery in Architecture Juhani Pallasmaa All artistic and architectural effects are evoked, mediated and experienced through poeticised images. These images are embodied and lived experiences that take place in ‘the flesh of the world’, becoming part of us, at the same time that we unconsciously project aspects of ourselves on to a conceived space, object or event. Artistic images have a life and reality of their own and they develop through unexpected associations rather than rational and causal logic. Images are usually thought of as retinal pictures but profound poetic images are multi-sensory and they address us in an embodied and emotive manner. Architecture is usually analysed and taught as a discipline that articulates space and geometry, but the mental impact of architecture arises significantly from its image quality that integrates the various aspects and dimensions of experience into a singular, internalised and remembered entity. The material reality is fused with our mental and imaginative realm. The book is organised into five main parts that look at in turn: the image in contemporary culture; language, thought and the image; the many faces of the image; the poetic image; and finally the architectural image. The Embodied Image is illustrated with over sixty images in pairs, which are diverse in subject. They range from scientific images to historic artistic and architectural masterpieces. Artworks span Michelangelo and Vermeer to Gordon Matta- Clark and architecture takes in Modern Masters such as Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto, as well as significant contemporary works by Steven Holl and Daniel Libeskind.

Seduction Of The Minotaur written by Anais Nin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with categories.

Seduction of the Minotaur is an example of Anaïs Nin's most mature and cohesive fiction. The central character, Lillian, arrives in exotically primitive Mexico from New York, in part to forget her crumbling marriage and to find flow in her life after years of stasis. She befriends Dr. Hernandez, who, like Lillian, is also trying to forget, to escape, which he does with violence, shocking Lillian into facing her inner demon, the "Minotaur."Critic Oliver Evans says of Seduction of the Minotaur: "Its symbolism is the most complicated of any of Miss Nin's longer works...and at the same time it makes more concessions...to the tradition of the realistic novel: the result is a work of unusual richness."Consider this passage: "It was the time of the year when everyone's attention was focused on the moon. 'The first terrestrial body to be explored will undoubtedly be the moon.' Yet how little we know about human beings, thought Lillian. All the telescopes are focused on the distant. No one is willing to turn his vision inward... Such obsession with reaching the moon, because they have failed to reach each other, each a solitary planet!"Seduction of the Minotaur reveals Nin's struggle for self-awareness through her character Lillian. In a setting that is sumptuously described, with fully developed characters, the plot involves the dichotomy between civilization and the primitive, the dark and bright sides of human nature, with a conclusion that is classic Nin: enlightenment.

Within the last ten years, the interest of historians and philosophers of science in the epistemological writings of the Polish medical microbiologist Ludwik Fleck (1896-1961), who had up to then been almost completely unknown, has advanced with great strides. His main writings on epistemological questions were published in the mid-1930's, but they remained almost unnoticed. Today, however, one may rightly call Fleck a 'classical' figure both of episte mology and of the historical sociology of science, one whose works are comparable with Popper's Logic of Scientific Discovery or Merton's pioneer ing study of the relations among economics, Puritanism, and natural science, both also originally published in the mid-1930's. The story of this book of 'materials on Ludwik Fleck' is also the story of the reception of Ludwik Fleck. In this volume, some essential materials which have been produced by that reception have been gathered together. We will sketch both the reception and the materials.
