For 79 days, the Umbrella Movement staged Hong Kong's most spectacular struggle for democracy. Sparked by disgruntlement over Beijing's denial of universal suffrage elections, the protests first began with class boycott along the largely-scripted Occupy Central, but later morphed into a spontaneous, resilient street occupation, transforming roads and pavements into protest sites and tent villages. Although the movement failed to bring any tangible political changes, it has transformed Hong Kong politics in many ways. Not only has it catalyzed the emergence of new movement agency, repertoires and claims, it has also defined a new era for Hong Kong, its relations with China and its identity in the world. This emerging political landscape merits thorough examination. This book is a collaborative attempt to examine this unprecedented and watershed event. It brings together 13 essays written by scholars with different disciplinary and research focuses. The chapters probe the political origins of the movement; identify new participants, protest forms and action repertoires; analyze protesters' strategies and regime responses; and also bring in comparative perspectives from mainland China, Taiwan and Macau. One common thread that stitches the chapters together is the use of first-hand data collected through on-site fieldwork across the protest sites.

English Abstract: This article examines the applicability of convergence thinking via two protests in southern China: the Wukan 'uprising' and the 'Umbrella Revolution'. These failed to usher in 'democracy' in an unnamed, 'Western' procedural sense. Yet the global media events expose the limits of convergence thinking, both official/PRC and Western/liberal. In so far as convergence is also about hegemony and rivalry, the events also show the fading of the latter, liberal one and the rise of the Chinese state as something which must be reckoned with analytically. It is not that the Chinese version is truer but that its relative legitimacy and actuality must be used to further citizens' ends. The challenge is to re-politicise the state and bureaucracy, and in this the villagers have a lesson for Hong Kong.

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the Chinese-Russian bilateral relationship, grounded in a historical perspective, and discusses the implications of the burgeoning 'strategic partnership' between these two major powers for world order and global geopolitics. The volume compares the national worldviews, priorities, and strategic visions for the Chinese and Russian leadership, examining several aspects of the relationship in detail. The energy trade is the most important component of economic ties, although both sides desire to broaden trade and investments. In the military realm, Russia sells advanced arms to China, and the two countries engage in regular joint exercises. Diplomatically, these two Eurasian powers take similar approaches to conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, and also cooperate on non-traditional security issues including preventing coloured revolutions, cyber management, and terrorism. These issue areas illustrate four themes. Russia and China have common interests that cement their partnership, including security, protecting authoritarian institutions, and re-shaping aspects of the global order. They are key players not only influencing regional issues, but also international norms and institutions. The Sino-Russian partnership presents a potential counterbalance to the United States and democratic nations in shaping the contemporary and emerging geopolitical landscape. Nevertheless, the West is still an important partner for China and Russia. Both seek better relations with the West, but on the basis of 'mutual respect' and 'equality'. Lastly, Russia and China have frictions in their relationship, and not all of their interests overlap. The Sino-Russian relationship has gained considerable momentum, particularly since 2014 as Moscow turned to Beijing attempting to offset tensions with the West in the aftermath of Russia's annexation of Crimea and intervention in Ukraine. However, so far, China and Russia describe their relationship as a comprehensive 'strategic partnership', but they are not 'allies'.
