Toward the middle of the 1950s, abstract art became a dominant trend in the Latin American cultural scene. Many artists incorporated elements of abstraction into their rigorous artistic vocabularies, while at the same time, the representation of geometric lines and structures filtered into everyday life, appearing in textiles, posters, murals, and landscapes. The translation of a field-changing Spanish-language book, Abstract Crossings analyzes the relationship between, on the one hand, the emergence of abstract proposals in avant-garde groups and, on the other, the institutionalization and newfound hegemony of abstract poetics as part of Latin America’s imaginary of modernization. A profusion of mid-century artistic institutional exchanges between Argentina and Brazil makes a study of the trajectories of abstraction in these two countries particularly valuable. Examining the work of artists such as Max Bill, Lygia Clark, Waldemar Cordeiro, and Tomás Maldonado, author María Amalia García rewrites the artistic history of the period and proposes a novel reading of the cultural dialogue between Argentina and Brazil. Además del trabajo de campo desarrollado durante varios años, los antecedentes de este ensayo corresponden a una búsqueda con la que se ponen en diálogo el material teórico y el trabajo de campo. La doble articulación deviene de una reflexión teórica sobre la imagen y el desarrollo de una práctica del dibujo que encuentra resonancia con el trabajo de campo etnográfico. Es así como llego a presentar las imágenes como textos significativos estableciendo relaciones entre prácticas. Los dibujos no tienen por lo tanto la intención de ilustrar al lector sobre el texto, ellos son notas de campo; son textos en sí mismos que se despliegan a manera de capas superpuestas, paralelas o adyacentes y le proponen al lector participar del orden de su lectura; cada quien sabrá encontrarles el lugar de acuerdo con los ritmos y el interés que le anima.

¿TEJERÁ UNA LEYENDA ANTIGUA EL DESTINO DE UNA JOVEN? En un pueblo de montaña vivían la abuela Atl, una tejedora muy talentosa, y su nieta, Nemimati. Nemimati solamente quiere ayudar a su abuela a vivir una vida mejor, por lo que la convence de participar en un concurso en el que el ganador recibirá el título de Hiladora Real y podrá vivir en la comodidad del Palacio Real. La abuela Atl envía a Nemimati y a su joven amigo, Mishtla, a recoger los escasos y semillas mágicas de colorantes rojo con centros amarillos a partir de los cuales se puede hacer un tinte dorado luminoso. Finalmente, los niños se detienen a descansar cerca de las ruinas de un misterioso jardín del palacio donde el Árbol Fantasma de la leyenda aparece fortuitamente y llena gentilmente sus cestas. Sin embargo, no es hasta el día del tan esperado concurso que Nemimati y su abuela Atl escuchan la explicación de la apariencia del árbol milagroso. Este relato mítico está ambientado en la era precolombina de un emperador tolteca que tomó su nombre del dios Quetzalcoatl. Su leyenda lo proclama como un soberano benévolo que promovió el sacrificio sincero unos por otros en lugar del rito religioso de corazones sacrificados practicado por otros gobernantes. También se dice que presentó a sus sujetos con riqueza y conocimiento.
