L’architettura, la scultura, la pittura, la musica, la poesia sono forme di quella che comunemente chiamiamo arte. Se prendiamo, ad esempio, l’architettura, vediamo che ci sono edifici modesti che non sono opere d’arte e persino edifici malriusciti con ingiustificate pretese artistiche; come si fa allora a distinguere l’arte da ciò che è semplicemente utile e dai presunti gesti artistici fini a se stessi? In cosa consiste il tratto distintivo di un’opera d’arte? L’arte è quell’attività che produce il bello, non si esita a rispondere, ma cosa s’intende per bello? Di domanda in domanda, Tolstoj passa in rassegna l’evoluzione di concetti di base quali il bello, l’utile, il gusto, la verità, il giusto, attraverso la filosofia, l’estetica, la critica d’arte, la letteratura; senza lesinare esempi concreti, giudizi perentori e stroncature sull’opera di tanti talenti consacrati. L’arte vera, sostiene Tolstoj, è quella che contagia, che è capace di suscitare nell’uomo quel sentimento di gioia nella comunione spirituale con l’artista e con gli altri che contemplano la stessa opera d’arte. In questo modo l’arte può stimolare la convivenza pacifica tra gli uomini mediante la loro libera e gioiosa attività e può dunque contribuire a sopprimere la violenza, facendo in modo che i sentimenti di fratellanza e amore per il prossimo, oggi accessibili solo ai migliori, diventino sentimenti abituali, istintivi in tutti. L’arte autentica, per Tolstoj, è dunque arte «popolare»: «non una collezione di opere – commenta Montani nella sua Introduzione – o un insieme di forme canonizzate, quanto il necessario risvolto sentimentale di ogni autentica sapienza di vita». Lev Nikolaevicˇ Tolstoj (1828-1910) è una delle più grandi figure artistiche e morali del mondo moderno. Che cos’è l’arte?, pubblicato nel 1897, dopo i capolavori Guerra e pace e Anna Karenina, segna una svolta radicale nella sua vita artistica e l’approdo della sua annosa crisi morale e religiosa.

A Japanese Art" will embark on a fascinating journey, in which that which is beautiful rivals with that which is good, and the "beauty" of a dish is an essential component of its "goodness" and vice-versa. If we consider this, it is easier for us to appreciate the attention for detail that goes well beyond the dish, from the choice of the crockery to the place where the meal is consumed.
