El bosque mesofilo de montana es una comunidad vegetal de distribucion restringida a ciertas areas de los macizos montanosos de Mexico, cuyas pendientes reciben constantemente la humedad proveniente del mar. Es la Sierra Madre Oriental, la que presenta una franja mas o menos continua, con este tipo de comunidad vegetal. La superficie de este bosque ocupa el 1%, pero posee el 10% de plantas conocidas en el pais. De la diversidad vegetal en este tipo de bosque se tiene que 450 (18%) son arboles y muchos tienen algun uso o importancia forestal, por lo cual deberia haber mayor interes por incrementar el conocimiento que se tiene de ellos y aplicarlo a su manejo. La plantacion o cultivo de arboles tiene un papel importante para recuperar areas boscosas que han sido taladas para desarrollar actividades agropecuarias y que despues fueron abandonadas por distintas causas. Una plantacion no es lo mismo que un bosque, pero la presencia de arboles puede acelerar la colonizacion de especies de plantas autoctonas y facilitar el repoblamiento de la fauna desplazada de su habitat. La recuperacion de las areas boscosas favorece la recarga de acuiferos y detiene la erosion del suelo."
