"A lo largo de estas cuatro notas hay espacios de reflexión sobre algunas cuestiones y algunos esbozos de críticas. Casi todos, si es que no todos, reflejan momentos de conversaciones con estudiantes y con colegas. A veces dejan entrever un tinte didáctico que es, en algunos lugares, reiteración intencionada. En más de un lugar, me ocupo de poner en evidencia lo que hace Sennett o lo que hacen los otros autores al escribir sobre tales o cuales cosas. Trato de llamar así la atención sobre cómo ellos construyen textos que nosotros leemos. Eso nace de un persistente interés por la creación de condiciones favorables para algunas experiencias necesarias de lectura: las que se viven al descubrir la organización de un texto, su trama total y la de cada una de sus partes. Al mismo tiempo, es un modo de responder a la queja profesoral frecuente sobre la lectura y la escritura de los estudiantes. Con respecto a lo primero, la experiencia de la lectura, todos sabemos lo bueno que resulta leer cuando, en lugar de conformarnos con quedar más o menos enterados de lo que dice el texto, tratamos de darnos cuenta de cuál es la estrategia y cuáles son las tácticas que dan forma, sentido y alcance a lo que leemos. Eso siempre es necesario en escritos a los que vale la pena dedicar una detenida atención. Es un modo de hacer que lo que leemos no sea un flujo de palabras, una corriente de frases, una cascada de páginas. Es una forma de leer que, si va acompañada de simpatía, o al menos de interés, hace que el autor sea una realidad humana. Aun cuando el diálogo con él no sea posible, esa lectura atenúa algunos efectos de la imposibilidad. Con respecto a lo segundo: con los estudiantes he aprendido desde hace años que la queja profesoral, de por sí inútil y a veces injusta, se hace progresivamente innecesaria cuando, juntos, consolidamos el hábito de leer de ese modo" ("Notas sobre el carácter y su corrosión"). Al igual que el cuadro de Rernbrandt El filósofo en meditación fue "un buen apoyo para la imaginación de Borges" ('Recuerdos de unas experiencias de lectura"), algunos textos de Patón, Aristóteles, Maquiavelo, Spinoza, Hobbes, Freud, Mignini, Negri, Sennett, Dworkin, Schmitt y Schlink lo son para "el interés por la creación de condiciones favorables para algunas experiencias de lectura'.
