Esta obra examina la configuración identitaria del líder liberal Jorge Eliécer Gaitán (1898-1948) y de sus seguidores teniendo como eje analítico sus concepciones acerca de la revolución, la unidad partidista, el pueblo y la violencia política durante la primera mitad del siglo xx en Colombia. Para ello, se analiza la discursividad de este líder y sus partidarios desde mediados de la década de 1920 hasta su asesinato en abril de 1948. La exploración de dicha discursividad da muestra de las luchas y de las tramas de sentido que dieron forma al gaitanismo en tanto proceso sociohistórico, y permiten inscribirlo dentro de los estudios contemporáneos sobre el fenómeno populista. Dando cuenta de las tensiones principales del gaitanismo en torno a pretender y azuzar una transformación radical de la sociedad colombiana y, a su vez, mantener las formas partidistas tradicionales y de los mecanismos electorales para alcanzar tal objetivo, se pone en discusión la manera en que los estudios historiográficos y sociológicos frecuentemente han entendido a Gaitán y a su movimiento, en especial caracterizándolos entre los polos antitéticos de ruptura y continuidad frente al orden político y social vigente. Asimismo, este trabajo retoma herramientas de la teoría política y la sociología de las identidades políticas para dar nuevas luces al estudio del fenómeno gaitanista, principalmente poniendo en cuestión su supuesta relación directa o causal con la violencia política de mediados del siglo xx. De este modo, como parte de los populismos latinoamericanos, el gaitanismo se caracteriza aquí como un proceso político que estableció un trato conflictivo respecto a sus contrincantes, pero que no giraba en torno a la eliminación física de sus adversarios.
