Pur essendo considerato il “teorico dell’egemonia”, e non occupandosi in forma prevalente del “Sud del mondo”, Antonio Gramsci è un autore di riferimento per i popoli impegnati nelle lotte di liberazione dall’oppressione coloniale. La ragione di questo apparente paradosso va ricercata in un fattore non sufficientemente approfondito: egli è figlio consapevole di un’isola povera, contadina e periferica, storicamente assoggettata a molteplici forme di dominazione e passivizzazione. Con un simile retroterra, all’interno di un lungo processo di definizione politica e filosofica, Gramsci concepisce l’emancipazione umana come prosecuzione, completamento e rovesciamento dei valori universali immanenti alle rivoluzioni borghesi. Tematizzando in maniera originale e unitaria il rapporto tra esigenze di interpretazione e di trasformazione del mondo, l’autore dei Quaderni rielabora la questione del rinnovamento del marxismo, fornendo categorie analitiche indispensabili al suo aggiornamento concettuale.
