I cannoni tacevano e la montagna sembrava dormire, sotto a strati a di neve, là, dove era tracciata una linea invisibile che chiamavano «Italia». Quella mattina, in sella a un mulo pezzato, Arturo sarebbe sceso a valle a fare rifornimenti. Il freddo, la fatica, la nostalgia di casa, in quella nuova vita che da quasi sette mesi aveva il sapore di polvere e di tabacco scadente, lo spingono tra i ricordi dei giorni di festa a Meretto, dall'amata Duilia, dal figlio Primo, dagli amici Polidori davanti a un piatto di brodo di cappone. Perché se il soldato ideale non prova sentimenti, è indifferente alla morte, senza alcuna memoria, al fronte di soldati ce ne sono ben pochi, i più sono semplici uomini, come Arturo, con famiglie e ricordi. E quel cessate il fuoco, passato alla storia come «la tregua di Natale», non fu altro che un tentativo di normalità per tutti i figli, i fratelli, mariti e padri, a cui era stato dato l'ordine di colpire un nemico in cui era fin troppo facile riconoscersi.
