La sociologie des sciences a contribué, avec l’histoire et la philosophie des sciences, à enrichit notre connaissance des conditions d’exercice de la pratique scientifique. En analysant les formes de communication entre chercheurs, le rôle des normes professionnelles, la préparation des publications ou, le plus souvent, en entrant dans les laboratoires pour y suivre le cours ordinaire de l’investigation scientifique, les sociologues décrivent la complexité des mécanismes sociaux et cognitifs à l’œuvre dans l’élaboration et la diffusion des innovations.
