L’intero impianto del testo si fonda su una visione dell’uomo in quanto “persona” e non “soggetto malato”; non appartiene alla cultura disciplinare degli autori - quella infermieristica cioè - la divisione delle persone in “oggetti diagnostici”. Poiché l’uomo è un organismo in continua interazione con sé stesso e col mondo che lo circonda, non potrà mai ridursi a una sola parte di sé. Tale considerazione deriva anche dalla Teoria di Ludwig von Bertalanffy, fondatore della Teoria generale dei Sistemi, base concettuale di molteplici discipline scientifiche esistenti, i cui concetti fondamentali sono l’apertura e chiusura dei sistemi viventi, l’omeostasi e l’auto-regolazione.
