Neither A Borrower written by Richard A. Serrano and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-02 with Literary Criticism categories.

"In his studies of borrowing from distant poetic traditions, Serrano aims to uncover the heterogenity of influences and intentions in the most canonical of texts: ""Mallarme"" (1842-98), ""Segalen"" (1878-1919), ""Wang Wei"" (701-61), the ""Classic of Poetry"" (8th century BCE), ""Buhturi"" (821-97), and the ""Qur'an"" (7th century CE). Arguing, among other things that Mallarme was really a Chinese poet, that ancient Chinese poets discovered the workings of film imagery, and that the Qur'an's apparently disjointed narrative is profoundly lyrical, Serrano intends to overturn accepted notions of how to read individual works. He brings methodologies from the study of one literature to bear on the reading of another."

"Adam Elsheimer is first recorded in 1600 and by 1610 he was dead. But Elsheimer was influential on the coming century to a degree out of all proportion to his brief career and small output. Above all, he revolutionised the handling of light in landscapes and interiors, introducing novel ways of handling complex narratives as well as inventing new subject matter in painting." "Although his importance has always been recognised, appreciation of the artist has been hampered by a lack of good reproductions. This book offers for the first time a host of lavish colour details from his paintings that demonstrate Elsheimer's extraordinarily fine touch and feeling. This major study, the first to appear in English for nearly thirty years, accompanies a landmark exhibition being held at the Stadelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt, at the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh and at Dulwich Picture Gallery in London."--BOOK JACKET.

Ranging over Canon and medieval roman Law down to the 1804 'Code civil', this work includes twenty-three articles on the history of law on the subject of the Child. Now that the evolution of behaviour and biological technology has led lawyers to fundamentally reconsider the laws concerning human reproduction, this work is especially welcome. These articles deal mainly with marriage and procreation, with natural and legal "filiation", legitimation and the child as a person.

In this bold new interpretation of the origins of ancient Rome's overseas empire, Dr Burton charts the impact of the psychology, language and gestures associated with the Roman concept of amicitia, or 'friendship'. The book challenges the prevailing orthodox Cold War-era realist interpretation of Roman imperialism and argues that language and ideals contributed just as much to Roman empire-building as military muscle. Using a constructivist theoretical framework drawn from international relations, Dr Burton replaces the modern scholarly fiction of a Roman empire built on networks of foreign clients and client-states with an interpretation grounded firmly in the discursive habits of the ancient texts themselves. The results better account for the peculiar rhythms of Rome's earliest period of overseas expansion - brief periods of vigorous military and diplomatic activity, such as the rolling back of Seleucid power in Asia Minor and Greece in 192–188 BC, followed by long periods of inactivity.

Socialism is strangely impervious to refutation by real-world experience. Over the past hundred years, there have been more than two dozen attempts to build a socialist society, from the Soviet Union to Maoist China to Venezuela. All of them have ended in varying degrees of failure. But, according to socialism’s adherents, that is only because none of these experiments were “real socialism”. This book documents the history of this, by now, standard response. It shows how the claim of fake socialism is only ever made after the event. As long as a socialist project is in its prime, almost nobody claims that it is not real socialism. On the contrary, virtually every socialist project in history has gone through a honeymoon period, during which it was enthusiastically praised by prominent Western intellectuals. It was only when their failures became too obvious to deny that they got retroactively reclassified as “not real socialism”.
