El título del libro indica su objetivo principal, el análisis de tres terremotos fuertes ocurridos en Cuba. Todos se produjeron en el siglo XX. Esos eventos con fechas 8 de febrero de 1914, 3 de febrero de 1932, y 7 de agosto de 1947 fueron perceptibles por la población, y consecuentemente concentraron la atención de la prensa y los científicos de la época. El primero de ellos afectó a la ciudad de Gibara (actual provincia de Holguín) y sorprendió a todos. Los otros dos, se produjeron en la vecindad de Santiago de Cuba, y recordaron a los cubanos las tremendas sacudidas sísmicas de los años 1766 y 1852. Esto acrecentó, en la población cubana, la errónea creencia de que sólo en Santiago de Cuba se producen terremotos.
