El acercamiento expone datos inéditos en torno a esta publicación de la comunidad española de México: una pieza central de la prensa españolista, multicitada en los estudios sobre la prensa mexicana decimonónica, pero que, paradójicamente, ha sido poco estudiada en la historiografía nacional. En esta obra se considera el complejo panorama periodístico de la época; de igual modo, se destaca la prensa extranjera que se producía en el país, actor relevante de la vida nacional. Esta revisión constituye un investigación original sobre la fundación y los primeros diez años de edición del periódico "El Correo Español", que refiere a la etapa en la que Fernando Luis Juliet de Elizalde lo fundó y dirigió (1889-1898). En el texto se entrelazan valiosos datos biográficos que permiten reconstruir las motivaciones, interrelaciones y redes periodísticas en las que participó el editor, las cuales establecieron un aporte a la prensa periódica comprometida en la elaboración de este diario, y otros, representativos de un sector de los españoles en México.

Don Luís era el patriarca de la rama de Vassouras. Apodado "Príncipe Perfecto", fue el segundo hijo de la última princesa imperial de Brasil, Dª. Isabel de Bragança y el príncipe consorte imperial Gastão de Orléans, Conde d'Eu, y fue nieto del último emperador de Brasil, Pedro II de Brasil y la emperatriz Teresa Cristina de Bourbon-Duas Sicilies, y de Luís Carlos Filipe Rafael d'Orléans y Vitória de Sajonia-Coburgo-Koháry.
