The printed debut of the canzone villanesca alla napolitana occurred on 24 October 1537, in Naples. Fifteen anonymous 'rustic songs' were published by Johannes de Colonia in a pocket-sized anthology with a cover featuring three women with hoes tilling the soil. The adjective villanesca (from villano or peasant) in the strict sense of the word means rustic or crude, but in this new context it also intimates that Neapolitan poet-musicians had been affected by the instinctive lyrical traditions of everyday people. The articles in this volume trace the Neapolitan origins of this song form, and its subsequent development as it spread quickly throughout Italy in a succession of editions published in Venice and Rome, providing a diverse repertory of lively songs to amuse the privileged that held and attended academies. Several studies focus on key figures in this process, notably Ferrante Sanseverino, Prince of Salerno, and Orlando di Lasso. At the same time the author relates these developments to the contemporary political context, notably the rivalry of Spain and France for control of the Kingdom of Naples.

Die Studie widmet sich der Untersuchung der ersten handschriftlichen und literarischen Rezeptionszeugnisse der Vita Nuova im 14. Jahrhundert und bietet einen innovativen Beitrag zur Kenntnis der italienischen Dichtung des Trecento und der Kulturgeschichte des italienischen Spätmittelalters. Die Arbeit schließt eine Forschungslücke in den Dantestudien zur Rezeption der Vita Nuova, welche von einer “Stille” umgeben worden sei und im Schatten der Commedia in Vergessenheit geraten sei. Die Auswertung der Textüberlieferung der Vita Nuova in den Handschriften des 14. Jahrhunderts, welche ein erstes Rezeptionszeugnis darstellt und die sichtbaren Spuren der Schreiber, Leser und Besitzer widerlegen diese Bewertung. Die Untersuchung der Rezeption der Vita Nuova anhand ihrer Textträger ist in dieser Form ein Novum für die Dante-Forschung, in der eine literaturwissenschaftliche Textanalyse als Ausgangspunkt für eine paläographische Untersuchung und kulturgeschichtliche Bewertung genommen wird. Die Arbeit besteht aus vier Teilen und stellt die systematische Auswertung der Handschriften der Vita Nuova des 14. Jahrhunderts in den Vordergrund (II. Teil), die durch eine detaillierte Handschriftenbeschreibung (IV. Teil) ergänzt wird.

Guido Cavalcanti, Dante’s intellectual mentor, is widely considered among the greatest Italian lyric poets; his famous and notoriously difficult philosophical canzone Donna me prega is often characterized as the most studied lyric poem in Italian literature. This book situates Cavalcanti’s poetry in the context of the Arabic Aristotelian rationalism that entered the Latin West in the 12th century—a tradition marked by questions concerning whether humans can ever transcend their animality. Cavalcanti’s poetry is a focal point where one can view, circa 1300 AD, Arabo-Islamic philosophy in the process of being assimilated and naturalized in Western Europe, eventually leading to values (associated with the Renaissance and the Enlightenment) that we now call modern and secular—in particular, to a notion of human reason as bound up with imagination and with ethical praxis rather than as a means for the attainment of knowledge concerning God and the cosmos.
