Este libro es un intento de pensar las diferencias, por encima de su posible unificación. Se trata de explorar los sentidos de la diferencia. La diversidad no puede reducirse precipitadamente a la unidad. La unificación del mundo no puede lograrse a costa de las diferencias. Por todas partes encontramos diferencias: al inicio, durante y al término del conocimiento. No cabe prescindir de las diferencias en el análisis de la realidad y la acción. La diferencia es primera. No hay un único sentido de la diferencia al que se reduzcan todos los demás. Hay muchas formas de ser diferente. La distinción entre algo y su porqué (la diferencia de la razón) no es desde luego el único sentido de la diferencia. Ni tampoco la negación. Más allá de la distinción entre algo y su porqué está la diferencia de poderes y, en especial, la diferencia entre el poder de la libertad y otros poderes ajenos a la libertad. No es posible la libertad sin diferencia. La libertad solitaria no existe: es un monstruo de la razón.

Apoyándose en propuestas de la ciencia social de la diferencia —la antropología cultural— y atentos a la problemática actual, se señalan cinco grandes núcleos de generación y vivencia de la diferencia (masculino/femenino, nosotros/ellos, conflicto y violencia, Norte/Sur, lo particular/lo universal) en torno a los que van apareciendo diversos temas que se exploran desde el punto de vista descriptivo, interpretativo y valorativo. Con ello se pretende ofrecer una aportación a este debate decisivo hoy para la razón práctica.

Eugenio Coseriu counts among the most important linguistic scholars of the second half of the 20th century. He is known mainly as a structuralist and a Romance linguist, but his work is in fact far more expansive in scope, including a comprehensive linguistic theory as well as writings on a wide range of issues, from semantics, syntax, typology, variational linguistics, language change, pragmatics and text linguistics to Vulgar Latin, the history of the philosophy of language and the history of Romance linguistics. Coseriu’s thought is founded on solid philosophical principles, and his life brought him into contact with a number of different academic traditions and cultures. However, for a variety of reasons (among which, the languages in which he tended to publish: Spanish, Italian, French and German), knowledge of his thought is rather marginal in the Anglo-American world. This book aims to go some way to addressing this situation by offering an overview in English of Coseriu’s main contributions to linguistics, and indeed to other disciplines. It is of general interest for the study of linguistics, the history of linguistics, and the philosophy of language, as well as for a broader reading public.
