Este trabajo parte de una doble convicción: por una parte, el análisis morfológico del sustantivo debe conceder igual atención a los nombres propios que a los comunes; por otra, no puede centrarse exclusivamente en la flexión y en la formación de palabras, debe ocuparse también, y con el mismo empeño, del estudio tipológico. Así pues, este trabajo se propone favorecer la inclusión sistemática, coherente y exhaustiva de los nombres propios en el análisis morfológico: sistemática porque intenta no excluir ninguno; coherente y exhaustiva porque se plantea en todos los niveles (flexión, formación de palabras y tipología). Se trata de una introducción didáctica destinada a alumnos universitarios, a profesores de instituto, a estudiantes y profesores extranjeros de lengua española, así como a estudiosos en general. Gran parte de la ejemplificación se apoya en textos literarios, no porque la aparición de nombres propios constituya una manifestación elaborada o literaria 3⁄4los hablantes recurren de continuo al uso de nombres propios sino porque siempre es preferible que el análisis morfológico opere sobre contextos concretos; y en otro nivel, quizá no menos importante, porque causa no poco placer comprobar una y otra vez que la maestría de los buenos escritores también se pone de manifiesto en la habilidad para elegir y usar con acierto los nombres propios.
