Per il sovrintendente Dalgliesh di Scotland Yard non sarà facile condurre un'indagine in un ambiente del genere. Il cadavere è ancora caldo e c'è già chi ha ricostruito gli alibi dei presenti o azzardato un profilo psicologico dell'assassino. Medici e infermieri, segretarie e inservienti, sono tutti troppo consapevoli, troppo abituati a studiare il prossimo. O forse leggono troppi romanzi polizieschi. Comunque sia, pur trovandosi piacevolmente impegnato a un ricevimento indetto dalla sua casa editrice, Dalgliesh farà bene ad affrettarsi. Quantomeno per evitare che scoprano il colpevole prima del suo arrivo.
