Il variegato arcipelago della psicoterapia è forse una delle arene più litigiose nel consesso delle scienze umane. In poche discipline come in quella psicoterapeutica si è assistito nel tempo a una progressiva parcellizzazione delle scuole in sottoscuole e varianti di sottoscuole: una polverizzazione di idee e teorie che ha avuto come risultato una specie di anarchia terapeutica, nella quale ogni analista si richiama al proprio micromodello di riferimento e alza steccati nei confronti dei modelli alternativi. Alle due scuole analitiche storiche – la psicoanalisi discendente da Freud e l’analisi psicologica derivante da Jung – si sono aggiunte ormai biblioteche intere di discussioni e scomuniche reciproche, lotte cruente ricche di gelosie e rivalità. In questo contesto sono nate molte visioni alternative, che sono oggi saldamente presenti nell’offerta terapeutica sul territorio. Perché una cosa è senz’altro vera: molti sentono il bisogno di un aiuto psicologico e moltissimi ne hanno assoluta necessità, essendo prigionieri di malesseri e vere e proprie patologie che impediscono loro di vivere una vita normale e di rapportarsi col mondo in modo soddisfacente. C’è gente che soffre; si tratta di capire come fare ad aiutarla. Dall’epoca di Freud e Jung il tempo non è passato invano. Al periodo eroico dell’indagine sulla mente, dominato da queste due figure nei primi decenni del Novecento, è succeduto un periodo altrettanto eroico di indagine evoluzionistica, derivato dalla rivalutazione del pensiero di Darwin, e successivamente il recente, fibrillante periodo di scoperte sul cervello e sull’architettura della nostra mente, favorito anche da tecnologie che un tempo erano inimmaginabili. Neuroscienze, scienze cognitive ed evoluzionismo hanno dunque iniziato a capire il sistema mente-cervello da un punto di vista nuovo e si sono impegnate in un confronto serrato e critico con le scuole tradizionali e con le loro teorie, spesso scarsamente ancorate al dato empirico. Con Biologia dell’anima Maurilio Orbecchi ci propone i temi fondamentali di questo acceso dibattito, rimarcando, contro ogni tentazione corporativa, che «non ha senso isolarsi in una scuola psicologica particolare, perché la scienza è un’impresa collettiva e intrecciata, che condivide un’architettura evoluzionistica che attraversa ormai tutte le discipline».
