First collected volume dealing with the use of Latin under Fascism This book deals with the use of Latin as a literary and epigraphic language under Italian Fascism (1922–1943). The myth of Rome lay at the heart of Italian Fascist ideology, and the ancient language of Rome, too, played an important role in the regime’s cultural politics. This collection deepens our understanding of ‘Fascist Latinity’, presents a range of previously little-known material, and opens up a number of new avenues of research. The chapters explore the pivotal role of Latin in constructing a link between ancient Rome and Fascist Italy; the different social and cultural contexts in which Latin texts functioned in the ventennio fascista; and the way in which ‘Fascist Latinity’ relied on, and manipulated, the ‘myth of Rome’ of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Italy. Buenos Aires, una trilogía metropolitana condensa en un solo tomo una revisión revisada y aumentada de dos libros anteriores, Buenos Aires Metrópolis (1997) y Buenos Aires Natural + Artificial (2000) más un material inédito referido al patrimonio y la transformación urbana. Este volumen y los que lo antecedieron tienen origen en un proyecto de investigación en arquitectura y urbanismo que emprendimos inicialmente con Jorge Silvetti, con el apoyo de las Universidades de Harvard, Palermo y Buenos Aires. No trata sobre planificación urbana ni pretende dar una visión integral o cuantitativa de los problemas urbanos. Trata en cambio, de enfocar sobre la cuestión del urbanismo desde su resultado final: la ciudad construida, la arquitectura, el espacio público y las nuevas formas de la presencia de la Naturaleza en la ciudad. Su orientación está basada en la elemental suposición de que la arquitectura y el urbanismo, son disciplinas que, a pesar de las dificultades y carencias diversas que presenta la evolución actual de las ciudades -en particular Buenos Aires y otras grandes metrópolis latinoamericanas, mantienen la cualidad de ser capaces de interpretar de la mejor manera el conjunto de requerimientos simbólicos, funcionales y tecnológicos que la actual sociedad latinoamericana demanda para la creación de su hábitat artificial. Este libro que es, por otro lado, producto de la enorme atracción que es capaz de generar una ciudad como Buenos Aires, intenta ser una contribución preliminar -proyectual- que permita comprender las transiciones que actualmente tienen lugar en su paisaje urbano y su espacio público, abriendo el camino a quienes tienen a su cargo las decisiones sobre la ciudad y a aquellos que se interesan por sus problemas y por la arquitectura.
