In contrasto con la tradizionale immagine di separatezza della scuola, lo studio dell'applicazione della riforma Gentile consente di mettere in luce i profondi nessi fra istruzione e trasformazioni sociali: ne emerge la vasta permeabilità fra liberalismo e fascismo, che toglie all'immagine della parentesi crociana ogni residua efficacia a spiegare la lunga durata di tale sistema educativo. Luogo di formazione delle classi medie, la scuola secondaria vide riaffermata la sua centralità all'interno di un progetto culturale e politico che metteva a frutto il ricco dibattito dell'età giolittiana, ma che Gentile non esitò a identificare nello Stato forte di Mussolini. L'intreccio di fonti legislative e ministeriali con statistiche, bollettini regionali, annuari degli istituti, manuali scolastici e nuove fonti d'archivio, ricompone il divorzio tra storia politica e storia sociale, aprendo squarci suggestivi sulla vita quotidiana della scuola e sul ruolo da essa giocato nella costruzione delle identità collettive. L'attenzione ai protagonisti, ai loro comportamenti professionali e sociali - da cui traspare anche la pesantezza della morale e della mentalità diffuse - restituisce un quadro articolato del modello scolastico nazionale e degli interessi che influirono sul suo funzionamento reale: non ultimo il localismo, che caratterizza il processo di fascistizzazione della scuola non meno di quello della società. Nel momento in cui anche il primo riassetto del sistema scolastico dopo la riforma Gentile si avvia alla prova dei fatti, appare utile riflettere sulla profondità storica della crisi dell'istruzione secondaria e sulla dialettica che divide ogni testo legislativo dalla sua attuazione nella viva pratica dell'insegnamento.

The Oxford Handbook of Italian Politics provides a comprehensive look at the political life of one of Europe's most exciting and turbulent democracies. Under the hegemonic influence of Christian Democracy in the early post-World War II decades, Italy went through a period of rapid growth and political transformation. In part this resulted in tumult and a crisis of governability; however, it also gave rise to innovation in the form of Eurocommunism and new forms of political accommodation. The great strength of Italy lay in its constitution; its great weakness lay in certain legacies of the past. Organized crime—popularly but not exclusively associated with the mafia—is one example. A self-contained and well entrenched 'caste' of political and economic elites is another. These weaknesses became apparent in the breakdown of political order in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This ushered in a combination of populist political mobilization and experimentation with electoral systems design, and the result has been more evolutionary than transformative. Italian politics today is different from what it was during the immediate post-World War II period, but it still shows many of the influences of the past.

This book investigates the racism against Southern Italian children attending North-Western primary schools between the 1950s and the 1970s. Turin serves as the main case study, having become the "third Southern city" after Naples and Palermo during the considered period. Far from being a new phenomenon, racism against Southern Italians gained renewed prominence in the context of the post-war mass internal migrations, becoming one of the pillars of the process of nation-rebuilding. However, in spite of its relevance, it has not received the attention it deserves. By drawing on a wide range of sources – printed, archival, photographic, and oral – and situating itself at the intersection of the history of racism, of education, of psychiatry, and of psychology, the book aims to fill this gap and to add to the debate on the borders that nation-states establish to control the access to power of the different groups inhabiting their territories. Its interdisciplinarity makes it suitable for students and researchers across a variety of subject areas.
