A un secolo dalla marcia su Roma, c'è ancora chi la ritiene una folkloristica passeggiata di migliaia di estremisti in fez e camicia nera, ai quali un re inetto e governanti paurosi affidarono il Paese. Viceversa, essa fu la risultante del progetto eversivo avviato nell'autunno 1920 con la mobilitazione della periferia fascista per la distruzione degli avversari e l'occupazione delle città. Un esperimento di conquista violenta dello Stato che mutò la storia europea. Con narrazione avvincente e molteplici fonti (documenti ministeriali, telegrammi di prefetti e questori, carteggi e materiale del Partito fascista, diari dei protagonisti), facendo tesoro delle più recenti acquisizioni storiografiche, Franzinelli inquadra la marcia su Roma nella crisi del dopoguerra e ricostruisce il variegato panorama insurrezionale (26-28 ottobre 1922) regione per regione, provincia per provincia, ora per ora. Ne scaturisce il drammatico scenario della resa dello Stato liberale, la disperazione delle sinistre, divise su tutto e inermi di fronte all'offensiva fascista, il sostegno di industriali, agrari e circoli massonici, la connivenza di esercito e forze dell'ordine. Ampio spazio è dedicato alle valutazioni internazionali dell'insurrezione, dalla Germania (sia quelle degli statisti che dei nazionalsocialisti emulatori del duce) all'osservatorio romano dell'ambasciatore statunitense (irretito dalla doppiezza mussoliniana), sino alle analisi controcorrente degli esuli antifascisti (Lussu, Salvemini, Silone, Tasca). Innovativa, poi, è l'analisi della «marcia dopo la marcia», nella sua trasfigurazione da evento storico-politico a mito fondativo del regime attraverso i riti degli anniversari, la pedagogia scolastica del 28 ottobre, la Mostra della Rivoluzione Fascista (1932) e i rigurgiti squadristi della Repubblica sociale. Dal grande affresco tracciato da Franzinelli emerge un'immagine inedita della marcia su Roma, che fu al contempo la mossa strategica di Mussolini per impadronirsi dello Stato e il frutto del suo indiscutibile talento nell'arte di combinare politica e violenza.

Emilio Gentile, an internationally renowned authority on fascism and totalitarianism, argues that politics over the past two centuries has often taken on the features of religion, claiming as its own the prerogative of defining the fundamental purpose and meaning of human life.
