Gifts Of An Uncommon Life written by Howard E. Friend, and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-24 with Religion categories.

This book of ten essays is a breath of fresh air, a source of inspiration, a wake-up call, and a bold challenge for pastors, congregational leaders, and church members--both active and lapsed--who long for a new perspective, even a touch of creative irreverence. With an invitation to quietness and stillness, inner strength and resilience, audacious hope and insistent confidence, it welcomes those among the people of God who do not belong to a church or even name themselves as Christian. Yet it does not shy away from raising difficult questions. Howard Friend offers forthright, at times disarming, candor as he shares his personal pilgrimage of activism rooted in contemplation. Convinced that God still seeks to work in and through the church, Friend shows us where God is present--at times despite the church itself. In his opinion, the church needs to stir the pot, upset the applecart, and dare to welcome the new and refreshing. Yet Friend remains hopeful for and committed to the church, calling and equipping it to become its highest and best. Drawing on a range of stories from the Bible and his own lived experiences, Friend invites us to meet real people--pastors, leaders, everyday folks--who dare to dream a new dream, journey toward a far horizon, walk with tireless determination, and press on with awesome hope.

The pages of this book reveal a truly uncommon life obtained from a highly credible and competent source. The author of the recollections, Tamás Kornfeld, i.e. Thomas DeKornfeld, M.D, was born into one of the richest families in Hungary in 1924. The young man clearly had practically unlimited opportunities but chose a medical career in order to help poor people. These plans came to naught after the German occupation of Hungary in March, 1944. Fortunately he and his family were able to leave Hungary under an agreement with the Germans and were taken safely to Portugal. Thomas came to the United States in 1945 and, after some military service, resumed his education culminating eventually in a professorship in anesthesiology. He was most active in the development of education in respiratory care and is the author of some seventy papers and books. In the present volume he not only clearly demonstrates his deep obligation to his adopted country but also gives a sharp and sometimes incisive picture of his childhood, youth and extended family.

Lifelines written by Tim Palmer and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-01-29 with Nature categories.

The health of our nation is reflected in the health of our rivers. These flowing streams supply our drinking water and they sustain the biological wealth of the continent. Central to our past and vital to our future, rivers are the lifelines, yet they are constantly under siege. In Lifelines, Tim Palmer addresses the fate of our waterways. While proposals for destructive federal dams are no longer common, and some of the worst pollution has been brought under control, myriad other concerns have appeared-many of them more complex than threats of the past. Now we face increased diversion of flows, loss of riparian habitat, and pollution from toxic waste, feedlots, farms, and clearcuts. Palmer examines the alarming condition of rivers in today's world and reports on what people are doing to solve the challenging problems. In many stories of hope, he chronicles the success of citizens and government agencies working for better stewardship and pioneering new ways of caring for our waters and land. Finally, he considers what the future will hold for these critical lifelines. According to Palmer, caring for rivers as centerpieces of local ecosystems marks a hopeful starting point toward better care for the planet.

A distinct voice in the nature/nurture debate, Rose's series of essays are a response to the biological reductionism of Richard Dawkins's book, The Selfish Gene (OUP, 1990), which insists that all aspects of human life are in our genes, and everything arises as a consequence of natural selection. Rose argues that life depends on the elaborate web of interactions that occur within cells, organisms, and ecosystems, and in which DNA has but one part to play.

LIFELINES is poetry by Ben Verona that speaks simply, directly, passionately, and sometimes humorously, about the human condition. This is poetry rooted in those fertile fields of human experience common to us all. LIFELINES takes a fresh and unique look at important aspects of our human condition, aspects we often lose sight of as we live in the busy circumstances of our daily lives. Much of this poetry brings us back to lost or forgotten thoughts, feelings, and experiences, refocuses them, and opens for us the door of renewed human possibilities. The poems in LIFELINES fall into five broad thematic categories, which are: -Human Condition- Human Possibilities -Open or Closed -Love and Relationships -Transcendent Experience -Wild Imaginings Wild Imaginings - is poetry that takes a fanciful look at our relationships with some of the wild things in nature with whom we share this planet. Transcendent Experience - is a category of poems that explore some of those unique life experiences capable of transporting us into that special realm of reality and experience that transcends the circumstances of our daily lives. These poems provide us with a unique look at our ability to have such transcendent experiences and open for us the possibility of enriching our lives with them. Love and Relationships - contains poems that address and explore what love is, what it means, and what it takes for us to get there. Some of this poetry explores love that loses sight of itself and causes us to treat ourselves, and our beloveds badly, and not from love at all. Open or Closed - is poetry that suggest that we are capable of being closed to anything, even love. These poems also explore the personal consequences of such closures, and refocus for us the innate ability we all have to open ourselves to love, and all of the other wonders of human experience available to us. Human Condition-Human Possibilities - is poetry that explores aspects of our human condition in the context of our experiences in the world and the events that occur around us, and that affect us physically and emotionally. In that exploration, this poetry opens for us unique portals of positive human possibility, and leaves to us the ongoing personal exploration of those possibilities. Across all categories, the poetry in LIFELINES is engaging, enlightening, thought-provoking, and entertaining. Its imagery is clear and powerful, and its humorous aspects, often subtle, are always playful, fanciful, and delightful. We, at Blue Goose Books, have published LIFELINES with the hope that you enjoy and benefit from this poetry as much as we do, and submit it to all of our readers to enjoy and experience for themselves. We appreciate and respect the highly personal and subjective nature of the experience that each individual reader has with books. We understand and appreciate that reading is an essentially interactive experience, and that each reader participates uniquely and individually in that experience. So, we present LIFELINES to our readers with that understanding, and invite their comments via e-mail at [email protected], or by mail to Blue Goose Books, P.O. Box 1430, Linden, NJ 07036.
