Under a Ginkgo Tree and Other Stories is a beautiful collection of new Polish-American writings. With a light pen, Sana Szewczyk touches on often difficult subjects of change, love, and family through her stories about her life as an immigrant to the United States. Each chapter of Under a Ginkgo Tree is headed by an original illustration by Barbara Pantaralka, a talented Polish artist. The reader will find a peaceful retreat among the pages of the book to contemplate on the beauty of the world and laugh while reading about one person's ups and downs. Under a Ginkgo Tree is also an easy guide to the complex world of Polish culture and superstition. Many of the stories in the book have been published previously in a variety of newspapers and magazines in the United States. "A very old Polish superstition says if a ginkgo leaf falls on a person straight from the tree, they would fall in love with the first person they see. I wondered if this had happened to the person who found this leaf and carefully placed it in the book." - Under a Ginkgo Tree and Other Stories

DIVPerhaps the world’s most distinctive tree, ginkgo has remained stubbornly unchanged for more than two hundred million years. A living link to the age of dinosaurs, it survived the great ice ages as a relic in China, but it earned its reprieve when people first found it useful about a thousand years ago. Today ginkgo is beloved for the elegance of its leaves, prized for its edible nuts, and revered for its longevity. This engaging book tells the full and fascinating story of a tree that people saved from extinction—a story that offers hope for other botanical biographies that are still being written./divDIV /divDIVInspired by the historic ginkgo that has thrived in London’s Kew Gardens since the 1760s, renowned botanist Peter Crane explores the evolutionary history of the species from its mysterious origin through its proliferation, drastic decline, and ultimate resurgence. Crane also highlights the cultural and social significance of the ginkgo: its medicinal and nutritional uses, its power as a source of artistic and religious inspiration, and its importance as one of the world’s most popular street trees. Readers of this extraordinarily interesting book will be drawn to the nearest ginkgo, where they can experience firsthand the timeless beauty of the oldest tree on Earth./div

In his third volume of poetry, Dr. Fred Smiley’s Sheltered Moments: People, Places, and Things offers a series of prose poems to capture small, meaningful life moments that often go unrecorded. The introduction explains how and why the text was written, describes the poems’ three tiers, and adds complementary quotes. The author then divides the book into three domains: real and imagined people, past and present places, and meaningful and eventful things. Built upon Dr. Smiley’s experiences as student, teacher, professor, and journeyer, this book contains adventures of mind, body, and spirit. Readers are invited into such divergent locations as a beach walk, a circus sideshow, and an old theater. The poems offer unforgettable characters, including a fragile homeless person, a wary town crier, and a unique professional wrestler. Rich with pathos and wit, with a mixture of philosophy, what-might-have-been, or what-might-be, the author also interweaves evocative asides and wry commentaries. Sheltered Moments: People, Places, and Things offers readers the enjoyment of the selections. However, Dr. Smiley also invites readers to compile and write their own life experiences and poetic journeys.

The resistance of the human spirit in face of time, disloyalty, and oblivion is the theme of Marina Sonkina's new collection of short stories. Her seemingly naïve and helpless protagonists inhabit disparate social stations, geographical locales and cultures; all are persons displaced in their own lives. But in their struggles for survival, they discover the redeeming and dangerous power of unconditional love - the only weapon available to them. Strange and incomprehensible to everyone, love makes its sudden appearance to an eight-year-old hunchbacked boy in the title story of Lucia's Eyes. As he brings the gifts of his artistic imagination to Lucia, a refugee from the Spanish Civil War, the bleak and cruel reality of Stalin's Russia dissolves into magic ... In 'Runic Alphabet' a Polish-Canadian painter plants a tree that brings to life memories of a woman long dead who remains the only true love of his life. In 'Carmelita' an aging man from Winnipeg, vacationing in Mexico, falls in love with a young Mexican painter. In 'Christmas Tango' a jobless drifter in snowy Montreal discovers tango, inadvertently transforming his own life and the lives of those who come in contact with him. In 'Tractorina' a hard-working crane-operator, retired in post-Gorbachev Russia, is driven into a rose-tinted abyss by her stepson. In 'Angels Ascending and Descending' a young girl is initiated into the mysterious symbolism of Russian Orthodox church architecture by a priestly man who hardly lives up to the spiritual heights he preaches. Full of unexpected turns and twists, sadness, joy and humour, these stories reflect life, itself always a surprise, and always a miracle.

Goethe And The Ginkgo written by Siegfried Unseld and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

In 1815, Goethe gave symbolic expression to his intense relationship with Marianne Willemer, a recently married woman thirty-five years his junior. He gave her a leaf from the ginkgo tree, explaining that, like its deeply cleft yet still whole leaf, he was "single yet twofold." Although it is not known if their relationship was ever consummated, they did exchange love poetry, and Goethe published several of Marianne's poems in his West-East Divan without crediting her authorship. In this beautiful little book, renowned Goethe scholar Siegfried Unseld considers what this episode means to our estimation of a writer many consider nearly godlike in stature. Unseld begins by exploring the botanical and medical lore of the ginkgo, including the use of its nut as an aphrodisiac and anti-aging serum. He then delves into Goethe's writings for the light they shed on his relationship with Marianne. Unseld reveals Goethe as a great yet human being, subject, as any other man, to the vagaries of passion.
