This book, which is aimed at general readers interested in maths as well as professional mathematicians, addresses numerous aspects of this spell-binding science. In particular, the book shows how mathematics is structured and how it works. Practical examples are discussed as well as the general role of maths in culture and art, in nature and in everyday life. The topics covered range from forms of logical argumentation to numerical analysis, from simple applications in ancient civilisations to sophisticated tools in modern cultures, from natural shapes to artistic creations. Furthermore, it provides a comprehensible and comprehensive insight into the fascinating panorama of mathematics, emphasizing its importance in human history. It assumes only that readers have a grasp of the basic concepts of school maths, allowing them access to the exciting world of mathematics and to fall under its spell. Numerous examples and illustrations clarify the text. Rik Verhulst is Prof. emeritus in maths at the Karel de Grote University of Applied Sciences in Antwerp. He is the coordinator and co-author of several series of maths textbooks for secondary schools. He is well-known in professional circles for his numerous lectures at congresses and colloquia and for his contributions to various journals. As a collaborator and lecturer at the Belgian Centre for Methodology of Mathematics, the Vliebergh-Sencie courses, the Centre for Didactics of Mathematics at the Catholic University of Leuven and the Flemish Mathematical Olympiad, he has long been involved in the training of teachers and the preparation of pupils for the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Few people studying Gauge Field Theory need to be convinced of the importance of the work of 't Hooft. This volume contains a selection of articles and review topics covering his well-known studies on the renormalization of non-Abelian gauge theorems, topological phenomena in gauge field theory and thoughts on the role of black holes in quantum gravity. The chapters are tied together by thoughtful commentaries which provide a background and the illumination of hindsight ? together they form a clear and coherent picture of the physical and theoretical importance of gauge theories and the gauge principle. This book is ideal for students and researchers.Gerard 't Hooft is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. He has taught at Harvard, SLAC and Caltech prior to his present position. Other distinguished honors include being awarded the Dannie Heineman Prize, the Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Chicago, Wolf Prize of the State of Israel, Pius XI Medal (Vatican), and the Lorentz Medal (KNAW, Amsterdam).

Toward Equity In Quality In Mathematics Education written by Murad Jurdak and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07-30 with Education categories.

Educational equity and quality are not only research issues which cut across different disciplines but are major determinants of socio-economic and human development in both industrial and developing countries. The status and role of mathematics, a subject which has long enjoyed a privileged status in school curricula worldwide due to its perceived role in science and technology, render equity and quality in mathematics education at the heart of human development. This is reflected by governments’ relatively large investments in improving the quality of mathematics education and extending it to marginalized and underprivileged groups. The purpose of Toward Equity in Quality in Mathematics Education is four-fold. First, the book examines the constructs of equity and quality and their interdependence from different perspectives. Second, it develops a conceptual framework for studying and analyzing the two constructs. Third, it examines, consolidates, and re-structures the literature on equity and quality in mathematics education. Finally, using data from TIMSS 2003, the book investigates the within and across country impact of the different equity-related factors on mathematics achievement in a sample of countries representative of worldwide geographical and cultural regions. Towards Equity in Quality in Mathematics Education uses a multi-dimensional conceptual framework to study and analyze issues in equity and quality. The framework consists of five perspectives hypothesized as determinants of equity in quality in mathematics education: Mathematical, societal, educational, ideological, and genetic. The framework can be thought of as a pyramid with mathematics as its base and the societal, educational, ideological, and genetic perspectives as its faces. Thus, each point within this pyramid represents a unique equity in quality situation i.e. with different coordinates with respect to mathematical, societal, educational, ideological, and genetic perspectives. Towards Equity in Quality in Mathematics Education is useful for teachers and researchers in mathematics education.
