Today, religion is a complex issue. In Western Europe, the so-called “Christian heritage” is challenged by both other religious traditions and secular worldviews. It is therefore essential to understand the complexity of religion in different contexts. This volume addresses four questions in this regard: How can we assess religion and religiosity appropriately? What are important markers of religiosity? How does religion affect recent society? How can religion be taught in modern society? By dealing with these questions, the contributions to this volume offer an insight into the recent state-of-the-art of research on religion and religiosity within the field of religious education on an international level.

The term religion lends itself to various meanings and interpretations depending upon the nature, education and the level of consciousness and conscience of a particular human being who actually harbors the idea or practices of his faith. It is evident therefore, that the concept of religion in human life and society appears to be most controversial and a complex thing which has variable meanings and significance to various human minds. It is indeed pitiful to observe that in the mountain maelstrom of materialism, man develops the tendency to ignore or undermine the edifying and enriching experience of religions and prefers to stay away from the path of the nourishment of his soul without which, both human existence and progress are seriously endangered. The practice of spiritual uplift is therefore, an indispensable condition of human progress and civilization, for a life conditioned by, and dependent on, mere material development is deemed to be fraught with utter futility. The essays chosen in this volume by and large have been written by scholars with a view, to unfolding either the virtues or shortcomings of many of the principles and practices of different religions. Some of the essays have sought to examine the causes and reasons behind the unhealthy views and superstitions and also to reveal a good and elevating virtues the cultivation of which may enlighten us for the realization of the noble ideas and ideals of life. The writers have made an honest attempt to look at the grim reality of some religious superstitions in order to find out the hidden light that rise beyond the boundary of blind beliefs and faiths. Such a quest is always worthwhile for a sincere seeker in quest of truth and light. The authors of the essays have taken pains to diagnose the deep-seated malady of blind belief, fanaticism and dogmatisms.

In Explaining, Interpreting, and Theorizing Religion and Myth: Contributions in Honor of Robert A. Segal, nineteen renowned scholars offer a collection of essays addressing the persisting question of how to approach religion and myth as academic categories. Taking their cue from the work of Robert A. Segal, they discuss how to theorize about religion and myth from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. With cases from ancient Greece and Mesopotamia to East Asia and the modern world by and large, and engaging with diverse disciplines such as psychology, philosophy, anthropology, history, film, theology, and religious studies among others, the volume establishes a synthesis that demonstrates the pervasiveness as well as the pitfalls of the categories “religion” and “myth” in the world. Belief and Truth: A Skeptic Reading of Plato explores a Socratic intuition about belief, doxa — belief is "shameful." In aiming for knowledge, one must aim to get rid of beliefs. Vogt shows how deeply this proposal differs from contemporary views, but that it nevertheless speaks to intuitions we are likely to share with Plato, ancient skeptics, and Stoic epistemologists.

The concept of credition represents an innovative research field at the interface of the natural sciences and the humanities addressing the nature of beliefs and believing. Credition signifies the integrative information processing that is brought about by neurophysiologically defined neural activity in the brain affording decision making. In analogy to cognition and emotion it is mediated by neural processes and constrains behavior by predictive coding. Three categories of beliefs have been defined on the background of evolutionary biology that can be differentiated linguistically. The goal of the collection of research papers is to provide an interdisciplinary discourse on an international level in the emerging field of credition. On this basis individual, group-specific and cultural narratives of secular and non-secular origin can become normative, in particular, when enhanced by ritual acts. Also, the recently defined belief categories can pave the way for novel approaches of empirical research on the formation of civilizations and cultures as well as for new perspectives on the psychopathological understanding of mental disorders. The disciplines of empirical research such as cognitive science, neurophysiology, neuropsychology, social neuroscience shall counteract with theoretical disciplines such as anthropology, philosophy, and theology in order to elaborate premises that are suited to bridge the scientific gap. The potential contributors will submit their abstracts such that they are available for the International meeting, Credition - An Interdisciplinary Challenge, that is going to take place in October 2021 in Hannover, Germany. Following the symposium, the participants shall elaborate their perspective concerning beliefs and believing, based on their expertise, and the information they have learned during the symposium. The authors are expected to submit a concise paper of 2000 words (C Type Article).
