"The growing interests in Lithium-ion Batteries (LIBs) have significantly accelerated the development of active materials. However, the key challenge is that electrode materials suffer from degradation, which include transition metal dissolution, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer formation, and mechanical fracture. To address these issues, applying an ultrathin coating onto active materials via Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) is an efficient way. Although numerious works have been done for active material performance improvement via ALD technology, the fundamental enhancement mechanisms of ALD coating on battery performance improvement are not yet known. Therefore, this dissertation consists of four papers, which focused on the ALD coating impact on Li intercalation, metal dissolution, Li ion diffusivity and interfacial property of SEI layer via first-principles study. Paper I explained why CeO2 coating has better performance than Al2O3 coating material via faster Li diffusion, facile intercalation, and less mechanical damage of coating. Paper II discovered an unexpected metal dissolution that ultrathin CeO2 coating intensifies the Mn dissolution of LMO and it was confirmed in several ways, including ICP-OES measurement, Mn vacancy formation energy calculation, COOP analysis, PDOS analysis, and cell level performance. Paper III revealed that the ALD CeO2 coating thickness impact on Li ion diffusivity in coated LMO is related to surface and bulk diffusion domination and phase transition of coating layers. Paper IV demonstrated that the fracture strength of inorganic components of SEI layer was higher than organic component, implying that the inorganic-organic interface can effectively block electron transport from electrolyte to anode particles to prevent futher oxidation of active materials"--Abstract, page iv.

This book surveys state-of-the-art research on and developments in lithium-ion batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. It summarizes their features in terms of performance, cost, service life, management, charging facilities, and safety. Vehicle electrification is now commonly accepted as a means of reducing fossil-fuels consumption and air pollution. At present, every electric vehicle on the road is powered by a lithium-ion battery. Currently, batteries based on lithium-ion technology are ranked first in terms of performance, reliability and safety. Though other systems, e.g., metal-air, lithium-sulphur, solid state, and aluminium-ion, are now being investigated, the lithium-ion system is likely to dominate for at least the next decade – which is why several manufacturers, e.g., Toyota, Nissan and Tesla, are chiefly focusing on this technology. Providing comprehensive information on lithium-ion batteries, the book includes contributions by the world’s leading experts on Li-ion batteries and vehicles.

Lithium batteries were introduced relatively recently in comparison to lead- or nickel-based batteries, which have been around for over 100 years. Nevertheless, in the space of 20 years, they have acquired a considerable market share – particularly for the supply of mobile devices. We are still a long way from exhausting the possibilities that they offer. Numerous projects will undoubtedly further improve their performances in the years to come. For large-scale storage systems, other types of batteries are also worthy of consideration: hot batteries and redox flow systems, for example. This book begins by showing the diversity of applications for secondary batteries and the main characteristics required of them in terms of storage. After a chapter presenting the definitions and measuring methods used in the world of electrochemical storage, and another that gives examples of the applications of batteries, the remainder of this book is given over to describing the batteries developed recently (end of the 20th Century) which are now being commercialized, as well as those with a bright future. The authors also touch upon the increasingly rapid evolution of the technologies, particularly regarding lithium batteries, for which the avenues of research are extremely varied. Contents Part 1. Storage Requirements Characteristics of Secondary Batteries Examples of Use 1. Breakdown of Storage Requirements. 2. Definitions and Measuring Methods. 3. High Performance Hybrid Lithium Air Batteries written by Longjun Li and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with categories.

Growing environmental concerns and increasing demand for energy have stimulated extensive interest in electrical energy storage. Li-air batteries are appealing in this regard as they offer much higher energy density than the current Li-ion batteries, but the nonaqueous Li-air batteries suffer from poor cycle life arising from electrolyte decomposition and clogging of the air electrode by insoluble discharge products. Interestingly, hybrid Li-air batteries in which a solid electrolyte separates the lithium-metal anode in an aprotic electrolyte from the air electrode in an aqueous catholyte could overcome these problems. Lots of efforts have been made on developing efficient bifunctional catalysts to lower the overpotential and improve the stability of hybrid Li-air batteries, but the cycle life is still limited. This dissertation focuses on the development of advanced cell configurations and high-performance catalysts for hybrid Li-air batteries. First, a buffer catholyte solution with a moderate pH, based on phosphoric acid and supporting salts, has been developed to keep the solid electrolyte stable and reduce the internal resistance and overpotential. With a high operating voltage and the utilization of all the three protons of phosphoric acid, the buffer catholyte enables a Li-air cell with high energy density. Further increase in power density has been realized by increasing the solid-electrolyte conductivity and operating temperature to 40 °C. The biggest challenge with Li-air cells is the large overpotentials associated with the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Noble-metal-free NiCo2O4 nanoflakes directly grown onto a nickel foam (NCONF@Ni) has been found to exhibit high OER activity that is comparable to that of the expensive, noble-metal IrO2 catalyst. Furthermore, a novel 3-D O- and N-doped carbon nanoweb (ON-CNW) has been developed as an inexpensive, metal-free catalyst for ORR. With a hybrid Li-air cell, the ON-CNW exhibits performance close to that of commercial Pt/C. In addition, a novel hybrid Li-air cell configuration with decoupled ORR and OER electrodes has been developed. The hybrid Li-air cell with decoupled ORR and OER electrodes eliminates the degradation of ORR catalysts and carbon support in the highly oxidizing charge process and leads to high efficiency with good cycle life.

Multiscale Modeling Of Degradation In Lithium Ion Batteries written by Fridolin Röder and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with categories.

This book provides a comprehensive methodology for multiscale simulation of degradation in lithium-ion batteries. The work helps to understand battery degradation processes by revealing complex multiscale effects, which cannot be taken into account by single-scale models. A novel numerical method is presented, which dynamically couples molecular models based on kinetic Monte Carlo method with macroscopic models. Moreover, the work provides mathematical models of degradation on various length scales, e.g. heterogeneous side reactions on molecular scale and the restructuring of particle size distributions on electrode scale. Instead of describing processes separately, the multiscale methodology systematically analyzes interaction of degradation processes and cell operation. The presented methodology is certainly applicable to other electrochemical systems with considerable multi-scale nature.
