The advantages of employing evidence-based practices (EBPs) are now widely acknowledged across the medical, substance abuse, & mental health fields. This overview paper discusses EBPs & their role in the treatment of co-occurring disorders (COD). Practitioners seldom have as much evidence as they would like about the best clinical approach to use in any given clinical situation. This paper discusses EBPs & their use in treating persons with COD, discusses how evidence is used to determine if a given practice should be labeled as evidence based, & gives some brief examples of EBPs for COD. There is still considerable debate concerning how EBPs should be defined. This paper presents various points of view. Tables.

Using an integrative pedagogy, the book helps readers broaden their understanding of co-occurring disorders through case studies, learning objectives, key terms, quiz questions, suggested resources, and references. By linking to previous knowledge and suggesting practical applications, each chapter provides clear direction for learning more about each treatment approach, diagnosis, and population discussed within the multicultural and biopsychosocial perspective. Co-occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Disorder: A Practitioner's Guide is a basic overview of current evidence-based practices for treating co-occurring disorders. Co-occurring disorders, also known as dual diagnosis, refers to individuals who have both a mental illness and a co-morbid substance use disorder. The literature suggests that utilizing an "integrated" approach to treatment, treating both disorders concurrently in a program with clinicians specially trained in mental illness and substance abuse, provides the best outcomes for this population. This book is designed to provide clinicians with the basic knowledge and skills required to effectively assess and treat co-occurring disorders.

As the first attempt to synthesize the movement toward widespread implementation of evidence-based mental health practices, this groundbreaking collection articulates the basic tenets of evidence-based medicine and shows how practices proven effective by clinical services research could improve the lives of many people. Intended to stimulate much-needed public discussion, these remarkable contributions cover both general issues, such as Implementing practices in routine mental health settings, including strategies for disseminating evidence-based practices to staff members Ensuring that efforts to implement such practices are informed by the knowledge and experience of administrators, clinicians, patients, and advocates Integrating evidence-based practices with the recovery model and focusing on guidelines and algorithms for pharmacologic treatment of people with severe mental illness Identifying the policy implications of the movement, particularly in public-sector settings, and describing eight courses of action for addressing the gap between science and practice and specific practices, such as Describing critical components of practices for which substantial evidence exists, such as supported employment, dual diagnosis services, and assertive community treatment Developing an evidence base for particular populations, such as children and adolescents and geriatric patients; and for clinical subgroups, such as patients with severe mental illness and posttraumatic stress disorder-and implementing a range of practices for each population Debate in public forums is critical to explaining the benefits of evidence-based care and allaying the fears of patients, practitioners, administrators, policy makers, and vested interest groups that evidence-based care excludes them from the decision-making process. Patients need to know that their individual characteristics, preferences, and autonomy are highly valued and won't be discounted by rigid adherence to the particular treatments. Practitioners need to know about the credibility of the evidence base and about new techniques and responsibilities and to understand that their favorite practices won't necessarily be excluded during initial attempts to implement evidence-based practices. Administrators and policy makers need to know about financing, organizing, implementing, and sustaining new practices. Finally, vested interest groups need to know that the introduction of evidence-based practices doesn't mean that what they do now is ineffective. This unique and densely informative volume will be welcomed by mental health care professionals and by lawmakers, planners, administrators, and others who are charged with the responsibility of providing effective care to vulnerable populations.

"Implementing Evidence-Based Practices for Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Disorders" provides managers and clinicians with results from Practice Improvement Collaboratives (PIC) that demonstrate how substance abuse treatment can be improved by increasing the exchange of knowledge between community-based service providers and the research community. The book examines improvement collaboratives and mentoring strategies for adopting and using evidence-based practices. Contributors address how to determine the best treatment processes to serve clients, how to deal with the hurdles faced in preparing and training counsellors, and how to affect the needed changes in agency activities. This unique professional resource responds to an Institute of Medicine report that found a substantial disconnect between research and practice in treatment for drug and alcohol dependence. Focusing on how to make the changes necessary to support the adoption and use of evidence-based practices, the book documents the activities of four sites to illustrate how investigators and treatment practitioners worked together to implement evidence-based practices. Contributors examine the development and early implementation of Practice Improvement Collaboratives, the investigator-provider-policymaker model, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, the use of Opinion Leaders in training, and targeted strategies that take into account the differences in clinician demographics and training. "Implementing Evidence-Based Practices for Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Disorders" is an essential tool for alcohol and drug counsellors, directors of alcohol and drug treatment clinics, and instructors in counsellor training and academic programs.
