College is an important and significant undertaking for any student, especially for someone with a learning disability. The number of students with a learning disability entering post-secondary education is increasing each year; therefore, it is important for academia to increase its understanding of students with learning disabilities and the perception of their experiences while they navigate their way through college. Using the theoretical framework of Self-Determination Theory, the purpose of this Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study was to understand and describe the experiences of students with a learning disability as they make their way through college. As such, this study sought to answer the following research question: How do upperclassmen college students with a learning disability describe their college learning experiences at a private university located in the Southeast United States? The participants perceived that by concealing their learning disabilities, it would be easier for them and they would avoid being stigmatized. However, they understood in order to receive accommodations they had to self-disclose this information after leaving high school. The participants faced many adversities; however, it was their resilience that made them successful. The findings are relevant for secondary and post-secondary professionals who provide services to students with learning disabilities. However, additional research is needed to explore the perspectives of students with learning and physical disabilities to include diversity such as gender, ethnicity and other characteristics that may be unique to the specific college.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2017a), there are over 19 million students who are currently enrolled in institutions of higher education. For the past 40 years, the number of students with disabilities attending colleges and universities has grown exponentially (NCES, 2017b). There is an abundance of research regarding many aspects of the experience of college students with a physical disability across social science, medical, and education literature; however, research targeted specifically at general counseling practitioners, counselor educators, and college counselors is relatively limited. The purpose of this investigation was to study the inner lives of a group of undergraduate students with physical disabilities as they pursue degree attainment. More specifically, the investigation sought to understand (a) their general concerns, (b) the types of challenges they face and how they navigate resolving them, and (c) advice they have for faculty, staff, and other students based on their individual experiences. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Harper & Thompson, 2012) was used to analyze in-depth interviews conducted with five participants. Findings revealed three dominant themes. Striving towards independence and self-reliance was central to understanding the experience and meaning making of the participants. Additionally, accessibility to space and all of the accommodations they believed would be helpful proved to be challenging. Lastly, students believed their engagement on campus was central to their overall success.

This study addresses the limited educational literature on college readiness for students with disabilities. This study also gives evidence in explaining why a disproportionate number of students with physical challenges attending and achieving in postsecondary degree to individuals with physical limitations. This study addressed two research questions: What is the lived experience of college readiness as a student with physical disability? What situations or circumstances have influenced or affected the college readiness experiences of students with physical disabilities? A phenomenological research design guided the exploration of this study.

Research indicates that physical and social environments are key determinants of health. However, little is known about how these environments can influence access to and inclusion in educational and leisure activities for postsecondary students with a mobility-related disability (MRD), activities that are important because they affect one's emotional, social, mental, and physical health. The key goals of this study were to gain an in-depth understanding of barriers and facilitators to accessing educational and leisure activities for postsecondary students with a MRD, and to understand what changes, if any, students think are needed to address the barriers. One-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine students with a MRD. This study shows that there are a variety of barriers to access and inclusion within both the physical and social environments, and even key elements of these environments that have been established to support access and inclusion do not work for some students.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how physical disabilities impact the experience of college students. Issues including physical accessibility, support services, and the transition from high school to college were also explored. Data were collected through qualitative interviews, which were analyzed for thematic content. Themes that emerged were related to the types of accommodations that students received, barriers in transitioning from high school to college, the attitudes of faculty and non-disabled students, continued physical accessibility issues that impact the lives of college students with disabilities, the importance of natural supports and spirituality in success, additional time and stress associated with disability, and positive aspects related to disability status. Limitations and directions for future research are also discussed.

How do disabled students feel about their time at university? What practices and policies work and what challenges do they encounter? How do they view staff and those providing learning support? This book sets out to show how disabled students experience university life today. The current generation of students is the first to move through university after the enactment of the Disability Discrimination Act, which placed responsibility on universities to create an inclusive environment for disabled students. The research on which the book is based focuses on a selected group of students with a variety of impairments, as they progress through their degree courses. On the way they encounter different styles of teaching and approaches to learning and assessment.
