Global trade is of vital interest to citizens as well as policymakers, yet it is widely misunderstood. This compact exposition of the market forces underlying international commerce addresses both of these concerned groups, as well as the needs of students and scholars. Although it contains no equations, it is almost mathematical in its elegance, precision, and power of expression. Understanding Global Trade provides a thorough explanation of what shapes the international organization of production and distribution and the resulting trade flows. It reviews the evolution of knowledge in this field from Adam Smith to today as a process of theoretical modeling, accumulation of new empirical data, and then revision of analytical frameworks in response to evidence and changing circumstances. It explains the sources of comparative advantage and how they lead countries to specialize in making products which they then sell to other countries. While foreign trade contributes to the overall welfare of a nation, it also creates winners and losers, and Helpman describes mechanisms through which trade affects a country's income distribution. The book provides a clear and original account of the revolutions in trade theory of the 1980s and the most recent decade. It shows how scholars shifted the analysis of trade flows from the sectoral level to the business-firm level, to elucidate the growing roles of multinational corporations, offshoring, and outsourcing in the international division of labor. Helpman’s explanation of the latest research findings is essential for an understanding of world affairs.

The fundamentals of international trade and the balance of payments are well known. Unfortunately, they are often sadly neglected by policy makers and not well understood by journalists who opine on such matters. As a result politicians advocate a variety of tax and trade measures that sound desirable but not only cannot be achieved but actually hurt the economy. This book is designed to lay out the fundamentals that must be present for policy to work as intended. The material in this book was tested over an 11 year period on more than 150 students, most of whom entered the course with a minimum of training in economics. Their difficulties were noted and the material refined to overcome them. This book is intended for those who have a serious interest in policy dealing with international trade and finance. While the subject matter has not been made simple, an impossibility, it has been made clear.

My desire to be of positive impact to my generation and to give back to the profession that has been of tremendous blessings to my career has inspired me to write this book Understanding International Trade Finance. Of my twenty-eight years in banking, I have been remarkably involved in Trade Finance in the last twenty years and I have identified the knowledge gap that exists in this specialized area of financial services and global trade at large. This book is based on my practical experiences of the last eighteen years across different geographies that has culminated in writing of this book in your hand. One intriguing personal experience in this field was that of a friend that travelled abroad and bought a car at an ex-works price and thought he had made a good bargain until about six months of waiting for the car to arrive from abroad but nothing turned up and he complained to me; I examined the documents and noticed that the invoice reads "ex-works." I told him that the price he paid for the car does not cover the cost of shipping the car and that it is his responsibility to arrange for this, then he realised it wasn't really a good bargain after all. Are you a importer, exporter, banker, students, trade finance practitioners, etc.? This book, Understanding International Trade Finance is a must read book for you. I would like to specially express my profound gratitude to my family for their love and supports in the course of writing this book. Also my colleagues and friends for their encouragements in the actualization of this project. Above all, I am sincerely thankful to God for the grace, courage, and strength for writing this book. In recent decades, the international economy has witnessed fundamental changes in the way manufacturing is organised: products are no longer manufactured in their entirety in a single location. Instead, the production process is often split across a number of stages located in countries that are frequently far apart from each other. By spreading out their manufacturing and supply chain activities globally through international investment and intra-firm trade, Multinational enterprises (MNEs) play a focal role in this reorganisation of production. Our ability to understand the global economy, therefore, requires an understanding of the interdependencies between the entities involved in such fragmented production. Traditional methods and statistical approaches are insufficient to address this challenge. Instead, an approach is required that allows us to account for these interdependencies. The most promising approach so far is network analysis. ‘Networks of International Trade and Investment’ makes a case for the use of network analysis alongside existing techniques in order to investigate pressing issues in international business and economics. The authors put forward a range of well-informed studies that examine compelling topics such as the role of emerging economies in global trade and the evolution of world trade patterns. They look at how network analysis, as both an approach and a methodology, can explain international business and economics phenomena, in particular, in relation to international trade and investment. Providing a comprehensive but accessible explanation of the applications of network analysis and some of the most recent methodological advances in its field, this edited volume is an important contribution to research in international trade and investment.
