Irhal means: Leave! It is, as known, one of the most widespread slogans in the language of the so-called Arab uprisings, and it has been used as a slogan also in the Lebanese uprising of 2019. The focus of this report is the analysis of the political dynamics which have been shaking Lebanon since 2019, to try to understand the future prospects of this country which, after decades of dramatic political conflicts, is now undergoing to deep, protracted and overlapping (economic, social, political) crises, whose end is hard to see. The starting hypothesis is that today the dominant understanding of Lebanese socio-political divisions along sectarian lines needs to be re-considered. We argue that sectarian based socio-political divisions should not be considered as a result of immutable religious identities, but rather as the result of historicized cultural, material and political conditions and practices. Therefore, belonging to a sectarian socio-political group means primarily belonging to a "functional group", functional for example in terms of opportunities in education, access to services, healthcare, job placement. In this framework, this report aims to offer not only an analysis of current trends but also to contribute to give a positive perspective to the current debate, which is too often limited to geopolitical analyses without paying close attention to young students and academics as protagonists of social and civil life who can act as promoters of change, as we have learned from 2011 and 2019 in Lebanon. Lebanese youth's voices are, according to us, a very useful reading key to better understand the actual situation, allowing an analytical perspective "from below" of the dynamics of social transformation. The project "Lebanon: between aspiration of changes and the ancien regime" has been developed in the framework of the project IRHAL - For an analysis of the Lebanese protests and the role of the youth beyond the paradigm of confessionalism, financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and coordinated by UNIMED.

"A fascinating collection of articles that go far to explain the social, political, and economic trials and tribulations of Lebanon today."--James A. Bill, College of William and Mary The wide range of seemingly intractable political, social, and economic situations affecting Lebanon's struggle to define itself and its future role in the Middle East are examined in this collection. Looking beyond concerns of politics and international relations, the contributors examine the critical course of Muslim-Christian relations, the educational system that will enable its citizens to play a significant role in economic development, the concerns of women, and urban and ecological crises. Seeking a more thorough understanding of both Lebanon's past and its future prospects, the book will be of value not only to specialists in the area but also to students of women's issues and to those concerned with the multi-dimensional aspects of Lebanon's future. Beware Of Small States written by David Hirst and has been published by Faber & Faber this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-29 with Political Science categories.

'Beware of Small States' wrote Mikhail Bukanin in 1870. He could have meant Lebanon: a sectarian state no bigger than Wales that has become battleground for one of the defining conflicts of twentieth-century history. Throughout its short existence, it has been attacked, invaded, occupied or interfered with to serve the political interests of foreign powers, resulting a series of devastating wars and crises. To understand Lebanon's history is to understand the history of the entire region - and, with the rise of Hizbullah, it has come to assume a disproportionate, dangerous power of its own. Iran and Israel now face each other in the hills of south Lebanon. David Hirst, author of The Gun and the Olive Branch, is a hugely respected commentator on the Arab-Israeli crisis. In a masterly narrative, he gives a much-needed, comprehensive history of the country and its conflicts, culminating with the recent war in Gaza and its fallout in Lebanon. Powerful and often moving, Beware of Small States is a magisterial book, essential reading for understanding Lebanon or the current political climate of the Middle East.
