Knowledge is constructed through our bodies, which exist within and are affected by place. Place permeates everything we know, and in turn, is redefined by everything we do. The ongoing globalization of our culture and economy has turned attention increasingly outward, and has devalued local community. Art educators can help students re-engage with their local environments by employing a place-based pedagogy that connects knowledge construction to the physical realities of students' lives. Particularly as students in the United States experience the homogenizing effects of a national curriculum, the arts provide rare opportunities for students to consider the unique characteristics of their own experience, and their own place. To help students engage physically and meaningfully in art making, this study suggests a teaching practice framed through place-based education that utilizes an embodiment of knowledge. An embodied knowledge is one that is formed by physically gathering information from one's surrounding environment through the use of the body. Through a review of relevant literature and a nine-week case study, this research sought answers to the following questions: In what ways is a student's understanding of place influenced through the embodiment of knowledge? In what ways is my art teaching practice affected by teaching, observing, and participating in embodied experiences of place? In what ways can exploring place through the embodiment of knowledge benefit pedagogies of art education? By conducting action research through a qualitative case study, I helped design and teach a mapping curriculum with a fifth grade science class at an independent urban school. This curriculum focused on mapping through embodied experience, and included activities such as mapping the classroom and the school courtyard, and orienteering both on school grounds and at an off-campus site. The phenomenological data gathered throughout this study showed that students were able to engage with ideas of place through mapping activities, particularly as these activities allowed students to construct knowledge of distance, space, and terrain through embodied experiences. Suggestions offered by this study include further work with the fifth grade science curriculum to frame place not only as a source of data for maps, but as a central component of knowledge construction. This action research changed my art teaching practice to include a deeper consideration of epistemological experience as art. Lastly, this study suggests great potential for pedagogies of art education that support a relevant, student-centered curriculum through embodied experiences of place.

In popular debates over the influences of nature versus culture on human lives, bodies are often assigned to the category of "nature": biological, essential, and pre-social. The Oxford Handbook of the Sociology of Body and Embodiment challenges that view, arguing that bodies both shape and get shaped by human societies. As such, the body is an appropriate and necessary area of study for sociologists. The Handbook works to clarify the scope of this topic and display the innovations of research within the field. The volume is divided into three main parts: Bodies and Methodology; Marginalized Bodies; and Embodied Sociology. Sociologists contributing to the first two parts focus on the body and the ways it is given meaning, regulated, and subjected to legal and medical oversight in a variety of social contexts (particularly when the body in question violates norms for how a culture believes bodies "ought" to behave or appear). Sociologists contributing to the last part use the bodily as a lens through which to study social institutions and experiences. The Oxford Handbook of the Sociology of the Body also prioritizes empirical evidence and methodological rigor, attending to the ways particular lives are lived in particular physical bodies located within particular cultural and institutional contexts. Teaching and learning involve more than just language. The teachers' use of gestures, the classroom spaces they occupy and the movements they make, as well as the tools they use, work together with language as a multimodal ensemble of meanings. Embodied teaching is about applying the understandings from multimodal communication to the classroom. It is about helping teachers recognise that the moves they make and the tools they use in the classroom are part of their pedagogy and contribute to the design of the students’ learning experience. In response to the changing profile and needs of learners in this digital age, pedagogic shifts are required. A shift is the evolving role of teachers from authority of knowledge to designers of learning. This book discusses how, using examples drawn from case studies, teachers can use corporeal resources and (digital) tools to design learning experiences for their students. It advances the argument that the study of the teachers' use of language, gestures, positioning, and movement in the classroom, from a multimodal perspective, can be productive. This book explores the early Jewish understanding of divine knowledge as divine presence, which is embodied in major biblical exemplars, such as Adam, Enoch, Jacob, and Moses. The study treats the concept of divine knowledge as the embodied divine presence in its full historical and interpretive complexity by tracing the theme through a broad variety of ancient Near Eastern and Jewish sources, including Mesopotamian traditions of cultic statues, creational narratives of the Hebrew Bible, and later Jewish mystical testimonies.
