La disparition subite de l'URSS au début des années 1990 a amplifié au sein de la société russe un retour réflexif sur le passé. Mais le rapport au passé soviétique se révèle particulièrement difficile à élaborer et est bien souvent escamoté au profit d'une survalorisation des temps prérévolutionnaires. Comment, alors, se construisent et se perpétuent désormais en Russie les souvenirs ? Quel regard les Russes portent-ils sur leur XXe siècle ? Pour progresser au cœur d'une anthropologie des façons de faire la mémoire, cet ouvrage explore l'histoire des milliers de familles originaires de la ville de Mologa, au cœur de la Russie centrale : à la fin des années 1930, dans le cadre des grands travaux staliniens, la création d'un barrage sur la Volga entraîna leur déplacement forcé, la destruction de leur ville et de 700 villages et l'inondation de près de 4 500 km2 de terres. Ces familles, encore aujourd'hui liées par une communauté de destin, restituent ici une expérience exemplaire de la période soviétique, par la démesure et l'arbitraire qu'elle révèle. Et elle permet de s'interroger sur l'empreinte d'un passé qui, à plus d'un égard, ne passe pas. Partant d'une interrogation sur la signification du " retour du néant que la communauté affirme avoir accompli, l'auteur décrypte les " bricolages de la mémoire des gens de Mologa. Elle s'interroge ainsi sur l'invocation de la légende de l'Atlantide dans la construction de leur histoire, sur la signification de cette " Atlantide russe " désormais figure de référence des déplacés, ce qu'elle révèle et ce qu'elle contribue aussi à cacher.

'Democratization' is a concept often used in academic book titles, yet not many of them deal with the initial breakthrough of democratization. This research companion presents an alternative view to the widespread assumption that Western democracies should be the normative reference for the study of democratization elsewhere. Rather, it questions the universal validity of such an assumption by searching the history of European politics and by paying specific attention to the struggles of democratization accomplished outside Western Europe. The authors apply a comparative approach to analyzing debates in the primary sources in a number of countries and languages and situate the results into a broader European context. This book provides a detailed analysis of one of the most prominent and widespread international phenomena to which criminal justice systems has been applied: the expression of revisionist views relating to mass atrocities and the outright denial of their existence. Denial poses challenges to more than one academic discipline: to historians, the gradual disappearance of the generation of eyewitnesses raises the question of how to keep alive the memory of the events, and the fact that negationism is often offered in the guise of historical 'revisionist scholarship' also means that there is need for the identification of parameters which can be applied to the office of the 'genuine' historian. Legal academics and practitioners as well as political scientists are faced with the difficulty of evaluating methods to deal with denial and must in this regard identify the limits of freedom of speech, but also the need to preserve the rights of victims. Beyond that, the question arises whether the law can ever be an effective option for dealing with revisionist statements and the revisionist movement. In this regard, Holocaust and Genocide Denial: A Contextual Perspective breaks new ground: exploring the background of revisionism, the specific methods devised by individual States to counter this phenomenon, and the rationale for their strategies. Bringing together authors whose expertise relates to the history of the Holocaust, genocide studies, international criminal law and social anthropology, the book offers insights into the history of revisionism and its varying contexts, but also provides a thought-provoking engagement with the challenging questions attached to its treatment in law and politics.

Thirty years after the fall of the Soviet Union, the 1917 Revolution still looms large: not only because Russians remain divided over whether the revolution arrived forcibly or inevitably and whether it was a colossally tragic or colossally generative event, but also because its social, cultural, scientific, and even moral residues remain everywhere in Putin’s Russia. Revolutionary Aftereffects looks at the ways in which 1917 has been and continues to be commemorated in Russia. Although post-Soviet Russia has emphasized its complete break with the past, this study of the memorialization and legacy of 1917 explores a fundamental continuity underlying an apparent discourse of discontinuity in post-socialist Russia. Contributors provide insight into the continuing reverberations of the revolution from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including history and literary studies as well as heritage studies, anthropology, geography, and sociology. Collectively, these essays demonstrate the changing nature of the revolution’s memorialization in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia and the ambivalence and contradictions within those narratives.

The third volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress "The Many Languages of Comparative Literature" includes contributions that focus on the interplay between concepts of nation, national languages, and individual as well as collective identities. Because all literary communication happens within different kinds of power structures - linguistic, economic, political -, it often results in fascinating forms of hybridity. In the first of four thematic chapters, the papers investigate some of the ways in which discourses can establish modes of thinking, or how discourses are in turn controlled by active linguistic interventions, whether in the context of the patriarchy, war, colonialism, or political factions. The second thematic block is predominantly concerned with hybridity as an aspect of modern cultural identity, and the cultural and linguistic dimensions of domestic life and in society at large. Closely related, a third series of papers focuses on writers and texts analysed from the vantage points of exile and exophony, as well as theoretical contributions to issues of terminology and what it means to talk about transcultural phenomena. Finally, a group of papers sheds light on more overtly violent power structures, mechanisms of exclusion, Totalitarianism, torture, and censorship, but also resistance to these forms of oppression.
