L'arrivée des romancières africaines sur la scène littéraire est récente mais importante dans la mesure où leurs oeuvres proposent une vision du monde différente de celle suggérée par les auteurs masculins qui ont dominé l'univers romanesque africain jusqu'à ce jour. L'idée de pouvoir qui se dégage de la lecture des textes écrits par les romancières d'expression française de l'Afrique sub-saharienne est particulièrement intéressante à cet égard. Elle témoigne d'un élargissement du champ littéraire qui dépasse de beaucoup un simple renouvellement des thèmes abordés par les romanciers. Une analyse détaillée des romans publiés par Régina Yaou, Aminata Sow Fall, Marie NDiaye, Angèle Rawiri, Mariama Bâ, Delphine Zanga Tsogo, Werewere Liking, Ken Bugul, Calixthe Beyala et d'autres, montre que les romancières africaines n'accordent que peu d'intérêt à l'idée de pouvoir «Souverain-Loi» qui domine l'écriture de leurs confrères masculins. Au contraire, les auteurs femmes ont tendance à concentrer leur attention sur une vision du pouvoir issue des rapports de forces multiples qui se jouent entre les individus à tous les niveaux. Dès lors, l'idée d'un Pouvoir tout puissant est remplacée par un concept plus souple, plus fragmentaire et plus conforme à la place qu'occupe la femme africaine d'aujourd'hui, non seulement dans les affaires de la famille, mais aussi dans celles de la Nation.
