This book considers secularism and its narrative expressions. It shows how secularism is articulated and transmitted ubiquitously within state institutions and outside of them. Abdelmajid Hannoum does this by dissecting, in a series of essays, a variety of narrative forms, interrogating modes of their constitution and production, the dynamics of their translatability, the politics of their use, the struggle over their status of truth, and the conditions that make secular narration so central to our existence. The book ranges from a medieval narrative of the secular to a modern narrative, to anthropological secularism and religious experiences, to narratives of translation produced by what the author calls translation ideology, to historical narratives regulated by archival power and state secrecy, to narratives of violence, to narratives of recollection, as well as narratives of silence. Particular attention is paid to postcolonial French contemporary cultures and politics. Transdisciplinary approaches are deployed to not only reframe old questions in new ways but also posit new questions out of old ones. Cette voix passive est déterminée par le préfixe mu. La racine de ce nom est constituée des lettres w, t et ’. Le nom muwatta’ dérive du verbe watta’a qui signifie « faciliter», « rendre accessible », « préparer » et « être le premier ». Le nom tawti’a signifie « préface », « introduction », « prologue ». Certains exégètes et lexicographes disent que le nom muwatta’ dérive du nom d’action muwâta’a qui signifie « l’accord ». Selon cette étymologie, le nom muwatta’ signifie « l’objet d’un accord ». Allah a dit dans le Coran : ( Certes, l’activité pieuse au coeur de la nuit a plus de wat’ ) (S.73, 6). Les exégètes (Mujâhid et Abû Najîh notamment) soutiennent que le terme wat’ dans ce verset signifie que le coeur et l’ouïe sont en plein accord lors de la récitation du Coran au coeur de la nuit. Al-muwatta’, premier livre en son genre Al-muwatta’ est un livre sans précédent sous le rapport de l’ordre, de la coordination, de la critique, de la pertinence et de la synthèse. Il est également sans précédent dans le sens où c’est un livre de hadith et de fiqh qui repose sur une méthodologie (manhaj) claire et bien conçue. Méthode suivie par Mâlik dans la composition du muwatta’ Parlant de son muwatta’, Mâlik a dit : « Il comporte des hadiths de l’Envoyé d’Allah, des paroles des Compagnons et des Suivants et mes opinions. Seulement toute opinion que j’émets repose sur un effort de réflexion et sur les enseignements des savants de ma cité (Médine) que j’ai pu rencontrer sans me distinguer d’eux pour chercher ailleurs ». Le muwatta’ est composé de livres (kitâb) (sections) et les livres sont subdivisés en chapitres (bâb). Sous chaque chapitre il existe des hadiths et/ou des paroles des Compagnons et des Suivants et/ ou ce qu’il a déduit comme qualifications juridiques de la pratique médinoise, ou du raisonnement analogique (qiyâs), ou d’autres principes de son école. Les avis de Mâlik dans le muwatta’ Les avis de Mâlik dans le muwatta’ En plus des hadiths et des traditions, Mâlik cite ses déductions. Celles-ci reposent sur ses interprétations des versets, des hadiths ou des traditions, la pratique médinoise (‘amal ahl al-madîna), le raisonnement analogique (qiyâs), la considération de l’intérêt général (maslaha), le principe de la fermeture des incidences préjudiciables (sadd al-dharâ’i‘), les finalités de la religion (maqâsid al-sharî‘a) et d’autres principes de son école. Mâlik et son respect de la diversité Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr rapporte que Mâlik Ibn Anas a dit : « Quand [le calife] Abû Ja‘far al-Mansûr a fait le pèlerinage, il m’envoya une convocation à laquelle je répondis. Après une séance sur les hadiths et après avoir répondu à des questions qu’il me posa, il me dit : “J’ai décidé de donner l’ordre de transcrire les livres que tu as composés — c’est-à-dire le muwatta’ — et d’en envoyer à chacune des métropoles du territoire musulman une copie en leur imposant d’en appliquer les enseignements sans les dépasser et d’abandonner les autres enseignements tirés de ce savoir qui vient d’être inventé. J’ai en effet constaté que le fondement du savoir réside dans les traditions communiquées par les gens de Médine et leur science”. Je lui dis : ”Ne le fais pas, Émir des croyants ! Car les gens ont déjà reçu des propos des pieux Prédécesseurs, ont entendu des hadiths et ont transmis des traditions. Chaque peuple a en effet donné son assentiment au savoir qu’il a reçu au départ, a agi en fonction de ses enseignements et a acquis la conviction que cette conformité est la voie de soumission à la religion d’Allah. Or ce savoir comporte des différences puisqu’il existe des divergences d’opinions entre les Compagnons de l’Envoyé d’Allah, et il est difficile d’amener ces peuples à renoncer aux idées auxquelles ils croyaient. Laisse les gens suivre la voie qu’ils ont déjà empruntée et respecte le choix de chaque peuple”. Abû Ja‘far dit : “Je jure que si tu m’avais donné ton accord, je l’aurais fait volontiers” ». Livre de synthèse Mâlik a procédé de la même manière concernant les livres de son ouvrage. Il a en effet conclu son muwatta’ par un livre qu’il a appelé Livre de synthèse (kitâb al-jâmi‘). Les versions du muwatta’ et la version que nous avons choisi de traduire L’imâm Mâlik a composé le muwatta’ durant plusieurs années — quarante ans selon certaines sources —, puis l’a enseigné le restant de sa vie. Pendant cette période, les gens venaient de toutes parts chez lui pour apprendre le muwatta’, puis retournaient chez eux pour le transmettre à leurs peuples. Or, pendant qu’il enseignait le muwatta’, Mâlik n’a pas cessé de le réviser, d’y apporter des modifications et de l’émonder au fur et à mesure qu’il évoluait dans le fiqh et le hadith. C’est ce qui explique d’ailleurs l’existence des différences entre les versions du muwatta’, selon que celui-ci soit rapporté par tel ou tel disciple. Les disciples de Mâlik qui ont reçu le muwatta’ de sa bouche et l’ont transmis sont très nombreux. Ibn Nâsir al-Dîn (m.840H/1436 apr. J.-C.) en a recensé soixante-dix-neuf. Le Dr Ahmad Mustafâ al-A‘zamî en a recensé cent. La version du muwatta’ de Yahyâ Ibn Yahyâ a été entourée d’un intérêt particulier par les savants de l’Espagne musulmane. D’éminents exégètes se sont fondés sur cette version dans leur explication du muwatta’, notamment Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr dans ses livres alistidhkâr et al-tamhîd, Abû al-Walîd al-Bâjî dans ses livres al-isîfâ’, al-muntaqâ et al-îmâ’, Jâlâl al-Dîn al-Suyûtî dans son livre tanwîr al-hawâlik et al-Zurqânî dans son livre d’exégèse. Plus tard, cette version s’est tellement répandue dans le monde entier, au point que quand on évoque le muwatta’, on fait automatiquement référence à la version de Yahyâ Ibn Yahyâ al-Laythî. L’une des raisons de cette notoriété est que Yahyâ Ibn Yahyâ a longtemps accompagné Mâlik. Il était à son chevet jusqu’à sa mort et il était présent lors de ses funérailles. Cela signifie qu’il a assisté à la dernière mise au point par Mâlik de son muwatta’ et donc on peut considérer que sa version est la version ultime et définitive du muwatta’. Yahyâ Ibn Yahyâ al-Laythî est mort à Cordoue au mois de Rajab (7ème mois du calendrier lunaire) en 234 de l’hégire (849 apr. J.-C). C’est la version de Yahyâ Ibn Yahyâ que nous avons choisi de traduire

This book deals with Islamic studies and with the question how the scholarly study of religion can contribute to the study of Islam. The author advocates studying Islamic phenomena as signs and symbols interpreted and applied in diverse ways in existing traditions. He stresses the role of Muslims as actors in the ongoing debate about the articulation of Islamic ways of life and construction of Islam as a religion. A careful study of this debate should steer clear of political, religious, and ideological interests. Research in this area by Muslims and non-Muslim scholars alike should address the question of what Muslims have made of their Islam in specific circumstances. Current political contexts have created an unhealthy climate for pursuing an “open” approach to Islam based on reading, observing, listening and reflecting. Yet, precisely nowadays we need to look anew at ways of Muslim thinking and acting that refer to Islam and to avoid certain schemes of interpreting Muslim realities that are no longer adequate for present-day Muslim life situations. Muslim recourses to Islam can be studied as human constructions of value and meaning, and relations between Muslims and others can be seen in terms of human interaction, without blame always falling on Islam as such.
