Si les structures sociales et politiques des campagnes de la région nantaise se sont pérennisées jusqu'à ces dernières années, et si l'on a pu dire, en exagérant quelque peu, que la Vendée était, au milieu du XXe siècle, un morceau oublié de la France du XIXe, tout change depuis peu. Ce sont les raisons de ces retards accumulés et les multiples causes des transformations actuelles qui sont ici analysées. Il s'agissait d'éclairer et de comprendre les raisons et les rythmes de l'inégale évolution d'un vaste espace rural, jusqu'alors préservé de toute agression extérieure, et qui présentait apparemment une remarquable homogénéité sous la livrée bariolée de la mosaïque des bocages. Cet ouvrage est le résultat de dix années de travail sur le terrain, et l'auteur a utilisé toutes les sources disponibles. Il se situe dans une perspective moderne, au carrefour de différentes sciences humaines et sociales : géographie, démographie, sociologie, histoire, sciences politiques. Il brosse, par une vue synthétique, le devenir contemporain d'un large pan de nos campagnes entraînées dans un processus de transformations accélérées, et il offre ainsi un ouvrage de référence, tant aux érudits qu'aux aménageurs ou aux simples citoyens. Une abondante illustration (180 plans et croquis, 34 photos) soutient la démonstration et permet de s'interroger sur de nombreux phénomènes intimement associés. A ces divers titres, il apparaît comme l'ouvrage indispensable pour connaître et comprendre la région nantaise : Loire-Atlantique, Bocages vendéens et Mauges.
