Degas, pour la dignite, rare a notre epoque de reclame a outrance, de cette vie d'artiste, si discute, si celebre, et, en meme si mal connu! En effet, cette nous allions presque dire cette sauvagerie, d'artiste a cela d'etonnant qu'elle ne cesse pas avec la celebrite, et que, lorsque le maitre si aprement combattu jadis voit son magnifique talent enfin reconnu et apprecie, il garde aussi jalousement qu'autrefois le mystere de son travail, l'intimite de son interieur, n'ac cueillant que quelques vieux amis ou de jeunes artistes qu'il sent vraiment epris de leur art. C'est qu'il ne faudrait nullement confondre cette modestie avec de l'humilite bien qu'ayant une horreur presque maladive de tout ce qui est pu blicite, M. Degas a parfaitement conscience de sa valeur, et cette retraite prematuree et voulue n'a, sans doute, d'autre cause que la fierte d'un artiste convaincu et enthousiaste se muant en un profond dedain pour l'incomprehension de la foule. Et meme, comme M. Degas est parfois excessif, il englobe maintenant pale-mele dans son dedain la plupart des amateurs et le grand public, ajoutant malheureusement avec les annees une pointe de misanthropie a son beau caractere, lui, le causeur petillant et fin dont les enthousiasmes et les emballements faisaient jaillir des lueurs inat tendues des sujets qu'il effleurait. Il faut dire aussi que sa reputation d'homme spirituel. Mais a l'esprit caustique et mordant, a du aider beau coup a cet isolement de sa vieillesse, tout le monde etant amene a respecter son desir de tranquillite, les uns par deference, les autres par crainte des terribles reparties que pourrait leur attirer une maladroite importunite. Reputation meritee et injuste la fois, car, si M. Degas trouve facilement. Surtout au cours d'une discus sion, le mot incisif qui reduit l'adversaire au silence, il ne faudrait pas lui preter l'esprit rosse et denigrant. Trop frequent a notre epoque, et qui n'est souvent qu'une des formes de l'envie feroce. Si M. Degas sait, en effet, au lieu de souffrir en silence, defendre rudement ses convictions artis tiques, ses pointes ne sont generalement tournees que contre les arrivistes ou les charlatans faisant de l'art une industrie ou un tremplin. Pour ceux 1a il eprouve la veritable repulsion d'un artiste au caractere droit et plein de respect pour sa profession. Il appartenait a Ingres et aux artistes du xixe siecle de revenir completement a la Vie et a la verite. David fut theatral dans les Horaces, le Socrate, les Sabines, mais veridique dans le Marat, le Sacre, ses beaux portraits. Il est l'indispensable precur scur de l'ecole realiste du XIX siecle. Le fougueux Geri cault le sentit bien, lui, qui fit le pelerinage de Bruxelles pour saluer David exile. Gros et Ingres sont sortis de David. Et il est permis de penser que Courbet n'eut pas renie le Marat, ni Manet, le Bara. On s'est efforce, dans ce petit livre, d'expliquer l'artiste et l'homme. On l'a fait sans phrases, le plus veridi quement possible. Les faits sont ici trop eloquents pour qu'on ait songe a les farder.
