Although the economy has begun growing again, it may be a while before the unemployment rate shows steady improvement. The unemployment rate is considered a lagging indicator, meaning that its ups and downs happen some time after the ups and downs of other indicators of economic activity. For example, more than a year elapsed before the unemployment rate trended downward following the end of the 1990-1991 and 2001 recessions. This led the two to be labeled jobless recoveries. By contrast, after four earlier recessions the unemployment rate began a sustained decline within four to five months. This report examines the relationship between economic growth and the unemployment rate to anticipate possible future developments.

The sinister notion that machines will someday kill all jobs has been around for at least 200 years. Yes, machines can replace people at work or change the work that is needed, and they always have. At the same time, the labor force participation in the world has remained quite stable for many generations, and on the whole, the middle class has been growing worldwide. Innovation can both kill and create work. i4j-Innovation for Jobs-is a leadership forum discussing how to disrupt unemployment and eradicate joblessness. All people can create value-but for that to happen, we need to develop a people-centered, rather than a task-centered, economy. Today, we are very far from that. According to Gallup, of the five billion people on this planet aged fifteen or older, three billion work in some way. Most of them want full-time jobs, but only 1.3 billion have them. Of these, only 13 percent are fully engaged in their work, giving and receiving its full value. This terrible waste of human capacity and mismanagement of people's desire to create value for each other is more than just very bad business. It is an insult to ourselves and to all human beings. We believe there are ways to move beyond the habit of rejecting and mistreating ourselves in this way. The good news is that this is an epic opportunity for entrepreneurs. Soon, virtually everyone will have a smartphone, allowing innovations for the first time to compete for the value-creating capacity of people everywhere, around the clock. We can begin to focus on raising the value of people, rather than only lowering the cost of tasks. All people can be offered jobs that are tailored to match their unique sets of skills, talents, and passions with the most valuable opportunities. People need jobs to raise families. Gigs are too unpredictable. Innovators can find new ways of satisfying the need for jobs-it does not have to be employment.i4j visions: Toward an Innovation-for-Jobs Economy by Vint Cerf and David NordforsChapter 1: The Bifurcation is Near by Philip AuerswaldChapter 2: The First Software Age: Programmable Enterprises Creating New Types of Jobs by Robert B. Economic Recovery Sustaining U S Economic Growth In A Post Crisis Economy written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with categories.

The recession that began in late 2007 was long and deep. It is likely to prove to be the worst economic contraction since the 1930s (but still much less severe than the Great Depression). The slowdown of economic activity was moderate through the first half of 2008, but at that point the weakening economy was overtaken by a major financial crisis that would exacerbate the economic weakness and accelerate the decline. Recent evidence suggests that the process of economic recovery has begun. Real gross domestic product (GDP) has been on a positive track since mid-2009. The stock market has recovered from its lows, and employment has increased moderately. On the other hand, significant economic weakness remains evident, particularly in the labor and housing markets. In the typical post-war business cycle, lower than normal growth during the recession is quickly followed by a recovery period with above normal growth. This above normal growth serves to speed up the reentry of the unemployed to the workforce. Once the economy reaches potential output (and full employment), growth returns to its normal growth path where the pace of aggregate spending advances in step with the pace of aggregate supply.

Work Sharing During The Great Recession written by Jon Carleton Messenger and has been published by Edward Elgar Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-01 with Business & Economics categories.

'Work sharing' is a labour market instrument devised to distribute a reduced volume of work to the same (or similar) number of workers over a diminished period of working time in order to avoid redundancies. This fascinating and timely study presents the concept and history of work sharing and explores the complexities and trade-offs involved in its use as both a strategy for preserving jobs and a policy for increasing employment. The expert contributors examine the resurgence in the use of work sharing as a job preservation strategy via country case studies of work-sharing programmes implemented across the globe during the Great Recession of 20082009. These studies clearly illustrate that work sharing has been successful as a crisis-response measure in a number of countries. Lessons learned and their implications are presented alongside prescriptions on how to design permanent work-sharing policies that would provide appropriate incentives to generate positive effects for employment and promote a sustainable and job-rich economic recovery. This enlightening book will prove invaluable to academics, researchers, students and policymakers in the fields of labour economics, public sector economics and social policy.
