What drives economic growth in New Zealand? How have we been impacted by globalisation and the financial crisis? And what will shape our future productivity and competitiveness? In this book leading economists Ralph Lattimore and Shamubeel Eaqub bring together key data to provide a readable and analytical introduction to the contemporary New Zealand economy. Small and open, the New Zealand economy is frequently buffeted by changing international commodity prices and interest rates as well as shifts in domestic policy. To make sense of our dynamic economy, Lattimore and Eaqub interpret data on key economic indicators over time - GDP and interest rates, population, employment and productivity levels, trade and investment, government accounts. They focus particularly on two issues of key importance to contemporary New Zealand: globalisation and the rise of the Asian economics over the past thirty years; and the origins and continuing effects of the 2007-08 Global Financial Crisis. The New Zealand Economy includes case studies by Professors Gary Hawke and Philip McCann. Rich with local data and case studies, The New Zealand Economy is a clear and concise assessment of the current structure and performance of New Zealand's economy from a historical and global perspective. The book is an ideal supplementary text for undergraduates and MBA students as well as a pocket primer for New Zealanders involved in business and policy.

The aim of this book is to provide the reader with an overview of New Zealand's international relations. It is a country that has often shown an international presence that is out of proportion to the modest spectrum of national economic, military and diplomatic capabilities at its disposal. In this volume, the editors have called upon a range of specialists representing a range of views drawn from the worlds of academia, policy-making, and civil society. It is an attempt to present a rounded picture of New Zealand's place in the world, one that does not rely exclusively on any particular perspective. The book does not claim to be exhaustive. But it does seek to present a more wide-ranging treatment of New Zealand's foreign relations than has generally been the case in the past. Five broad themes help shape and organize the contributions to the text: History and National IdentityEconomics and RegionalismMoralityGeopolitics and National Security InterestsDiplomatic Engagement and Multilateralism Contents: Introduction: New Zealand and the World: Past, Present and Future (Iati Iati and Robert G Patman)History and National Identity: Building Foreign Policy in New Zealand: The Role of the University of Otago Foreign Policy School, 1966–1976 (Austin Gee, Robert G Patman and Christopher Rudd)The New Zealand Prime Minister and the 1985 Otago Foreign Policy School — A Pivotal Moment for the Labour Government's Foreign Policy (Ken Ross)Gallipoli, National Identity and New Beginnings (Ian McGibbon)National Identity and New Zealand Foreign Policy (Terence O'Brien)Exporting Aotearoa New Zealand's Biculturalism: Lessons for Indigenous-Settler Relations in Canada (David B MacDonald)What Does New Zealand's Changing Demography Mean for Its Place in the World? When electronic digital computers first appeared after World War II, they appeared as a revolutionary force. Business management, the world of work, administrative life, the nation state, and soon enough everyday life were expected to change dramatically with these machines’ use. Ever since, diverse prophecies of computing have continually emerged, through to the present day. As computing spread beyond the US and UK, such prophecies emerged from strikingly different economic, political, and cultural conditions. This volume explores how these expectations differed, assesses unexpected commonalities, and suggests ways to understand the divergences and convergences. This book examines thirteen countries, based on source material in ten different languages—the effort of an international team of scholars. In addition to analyses of debates, political changes, and popular speculations, we also show a wide range of pictorial representations of "the future with computers."

This book shows that the faith in educational markets is misplaced. Throughout the English speaking world and now Western Europe and parts of East Asia parental choice and educational markets are being seen by politicians and policy advisors as the panacea to problems of low educational standards and social exclusion. This book is the first to systematically test the key assumptions underlying the faith in markets by linking an analysis of parental choice to flows of students between schools and their impact on school effectiveness. The results of this study suggest that the ability to realize choices is dependent on social class, gender and ethnicity and that this can have a negative impact on some schools' performance. Rather than raising standards the impact of markets is to polarise them, leading to an impoverished education for many students. This important book will be vital reading for students of educational policy, sociology of education and school effectiveness and improvement, educational researchers, academics and policymakers.
