Vision And Certitude In The Age Of Ockham written by Katherine Tachau and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-11 with Philosophy categories.

When William of Ockham lectured on Lombard’s Sentences in 1317-1319, he articulated a new theory of knowledge. Its reception by fourteenth-century scholars was, however, largely negative, for it conflicted with technical accounts of vision and with their interprations of Duns Scotus. This study begins with Roger Bacon, a major source for later scholastics’ efforts to tie a complex of semantic and optical explanations together into an account of concept formation, truth and the acquisition of certitude. After considering the challenges of Peter Olivi and Henry of Ghent, Part I concludes with a discussion of Scotus’s epistemology. Part II explores the alternative theories of Peter Aureol and William of Ockham. Part III traces the impact of Scotus, and then of Aureol, on Oxford thought in the years of Ockham’s early audience, culminating with the views of Adam Wodeham. Part IV concerns Aureol’s intellectual legacy at Paris, the introduction of Wodeham’s thought there, and Autrecourt’s controversies.

The first English translation, with a new Latin edition, of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola's compilation of what he considered the whole of western thought, including Jewish and Arabic, from the earliest times to his own, which he prepared as background material for a grand debate he planned the next year in Rome. Farmer analyzes the man, times, text, genre, transmission, and other aspects before presenting the Latin original and an English translation on facing pages, which are in turn firmly grounded with footnotes. Names and works are indexed separately from subjects. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

The Transformation Of Natural Philosophy written by Sachiko Kusukawa and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-03-09 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This book proposes that Philip Melanchthon was responsible for transforming traditional university natural philosophy into a specifically Lutheran one. Motivated by desire to check civil disobedience and promote a Lutheran orthodoxy, he created a natural philosophy based on Aristotle, Galen and Plato, incorporating contemporary findings of Copernicus and Vesalius. The fields of astrology, anatomy, botany and mathematics all constituted a natural philosophy in which Melanchthon wished to demonstrate God's Providential design in the physical world. Rather than dichotomizing or synthesizing the two distinct areas of 'science' and 'religion', Kusukawa advocates the need to look at 'Natural philosophy' as a discipline quite different from either 'modern science' or 'religion': a contextual assessment of the implication of the Lutheran Reformation on university education, particularly on natural philosophy.

A Critical Edition (together with introduction and English translation) of the Pseudo-Avicenna "Liber Celi et Mundi," a Latin translation from Arabic of a paraphrase of Aristotle's "De Caelo," It was translated in Spain in the later twelfth century, almost certainly by Dominicus Gundissalinus and Johannes Hispanus. The text circulated widely in Western Europe in the later Middle Ages, in collections of the early Latin translations of the Aristotelian corpus and of the Arabic commentaries. The Origins of the "Liber Celi et Mundi" are unknown but the editor suggests that the author may have been the prolific Arabic translator, ?unayn Ibn Is q. This edition will be of particular interest to students of the Aristotelian tradition and the Arabic and Latin translators.
