We all strive to understand our world. Most of us ponder the meaning of existence and search for purpose in our lives. The answers we seek are not easily found, for the wisdom needed to do so is not easily acquired. It is not fruit that can be plucked from a tree, but a mountain that must be climbed. The climb involves an ongoing search for truth about our world and ourselves. It is in the spirit of such a search that this book is offered for your consideration. It is a scientifically-grounded journey in search of the meaning for your (and my) existence; one that is linked with the meaning for the existence of our species, the existence of life and the existence of everything. The Journey begins with an exploration of our Universe, to understand that from which our existence comes. It continues with an examination of our strengths and weaknesses as a species, as well as of the world that we have created. It then provides pertinent recommendations regarding changes and actions that each of us can embrace as individuals, and that we most likely must embrace as a species, if we are to continue to thrive (and perhaps even to survive) on this earth and, eventually, within our Universe. The Journey within this book is one that can serve as either the beginning, or the continuation, of a never-ending search for understanding of some of the most important issues in our lives.

Are there universal properties grounding our sense of resemblance or qualitative identity among a number of distinct things or events which appear to form a class, a type or a kind of some other sort? Do universals such as humanness, triangularity, or being an Oak exist? Is being a laptop computer a universal, which has only recently come into existence? Do predicate expressions, adjectives or abstract nouns refer to objective properties or cognitive contents called concepts? The problem of universals has been at the centre of ancient, medieval, Western, and Indian metaphysics. After the logico-linguistic turn in philosophy, this problem re-surfaced in the discourse on the meaning of predicate expressions on the one hand and in the theories of concepts on the other.

Meaning And Universal Grammar written by Cliff Goddard and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-05-31 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book develops a bold new approach to universal grammar, based on research findings of the natural semantic metalanguage (NSM) program. The key idea is that universal grammar is constituted by the inherent grammatical properties of some 60 empirically established semantic primes, which appear to have concrete exponents in all languages. For six typologically divergent languages (Mangaaba-Mbula, Mandarin Chinese, Lao, Malay, Spanish and Polish), contributors identify exponents of the primes and work through a substantial set of hypotheses about their combinatorics, valency properties, complementation options, etc. Each study can also be read as a semantically-based typological profile. Four theoretical chapters by the editors describe the NSM approach and its application to grammatical typology. As a study of empirical universals in grammar, this book is unique for its rigorous semantic orientation, its methodological consistency, and its wealth of cross-linguistic detail.

The Universal Right To Education written by Joel Spring and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-04 with Education categories.

In this book, Joel Spring offers a powerful and closely reasoned justification and definition for the universal right to education--applicable to all cultures--as provided for in Article 26 of the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. One sixth of the world's population, nearly 855 million people, are functionally illiterate, and 130 million children in developing countries are without access to basic education. Spring argues that in our crowded global economy, educational deprivation has dire consequences for human welfare. Such deprivation diminishes political power. Education is essential for providing citizens with the tools for resisting totalitarian and repressive governments and economic exploitation. What is to be done? The historically grounded, highly original analysis and proposals Spring sets forth in this book go a long way toward answering this urgent question. Spring first looks at the debates leading up to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, to see how the various writers dealt with the issue of cultural differences. These discussions provide a framework for examining the problem of reconciling cultural differences with universal concepts. He next expands on the issue of education and cultural differences by proposing a justification for education that is applicable to indigenous peoples and minority cultures and languages. This justification is then applied to all people within the current global economy. Acknowledging that the right to an education is inseparable from children's rights, he uses the concept of a universal right to education to justify children's rights, and, in turn, applies his definition of children's liberty rights to the concept of education. His synthesis of cultural, language, and children's rights provides the basis for a universal justification and definition for the right to education -- which, in the concluding chapters, Spring uses to propose universal guidelines for human rights education, and instruction in literacy, numeracy, cultural centeredness, and moral economy.
