Der Minussymptomatik, zu der insbesondere Einbußen an Antrieb und Energie, Affektverflachung, Sprachverarmung u. a. gerechnet werden, wurde über lange Zeit hinweg weit weniger Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet als der produktiven Symptomatik schizophrener Psychosen. Erst in den letzten Jahren fanden diagnostische, psychiatrisch-biologische und therapeutische Aspekte der Minussymptomatik wissenschaftliches Interesse. In gut lesbarer Form referieren namhafte Experten den aktuellen Stand der Forschung. Im Hinblick auf die Diagnostik wurde neben einer phänomenologischen Feindifferenzierung eine Reihe von reliableren, standardisierten Untersuchungsinstrumenten entwickelt. Die biologische Psychiatrie forscht nach einem biologischen Korrelat dieser Störung, und die klinische Psychopharmakologie untersucht den Einfluß insbesondere der typischen Neuroleptika auf die Minussymptomatik. Das Buch richtet sich gleichermaßen an den theoretisch interessierten wie den in der klinischen Praxis tätigen Psychiater.

Psychiatric Contours investigates new histories of psychiatry, derangement, and agitated subjectivities in colonial and decolonizing Africa. The volume lets the multivalent term madness broaden perception, well beyond the psychiatric. Many chapters detect the mad or the psychiatric in unhinged persons, frantic collectives, and distressing situations. Others investigate individuals suffering from miscategorization. A key Foucauldian word, vivacity, illuminates how madness aligns with pathology, creativity, turbulence, and psychopolitics. The archives, patient-authored or not, speak to furies and fantasies inside asylums, colonial institutions, decolonizing missions, and slave ships. The frayed edges of politicized deliria open up the senses and optics of psychiatry’s history in Africa far beyond clinical spaces and classification. The volume also proposes fresh concepts, notably the vernacular, to suggest how to work with emic clues in a granular fashion and telescope the psychiatric within histories of madness. With chapters stretching across much of ex-British and ex-French colonial Africa, Psychiatric Contours attends to the words, autobiographies, and hallucinations of the stigmatized and afflicted as well as of the powerful. Christoph Henning writes a concise history of misreadings of Marx in the 20th century. Focussing on German philosophy from Heidegger to Habermas, he also addresses the influence of Rawls and Neopragmatism, subsequently scrutinizing a previous history of Marx-interpretations that had served as the premises upon which these later works were based. Henning sketches a historical trajectory in which a theory of socialist politics enters the fields of economics, sociology, critical theory and theology, before finally – overloaded with intellectually dead freight – entering into philosophy. In so doing, he takes a hermeneutic approach to how misreadings in a specific field proliferate into further misreadings across a variety of fields, leading to an accumulation of questionable preconceptions. Omnia El Shakry challenges the notion of a strict divide between psychoanalysis and Islam by tracing how postwar thinkers in Egypt blended psychoanalytic theories with concepts from classical Islamic thought in a creative encounter of ethical engagement. Drawing on scholarly writings as well as popular literature on self-healing, El Shakry provides the first in-depth examination of psychoanalysis in Egypt and reveals how a new science of psychology - or "science of the soul," as it came to be called - was inextricably linked to Islam and mysticism.
