Meet Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton. She’s the house-rich, money-poor keeper of the Manor—and keeper of the peace. In World War II England, the quiet village of Sitting Marsh is faced with food rations and fear for loved ones. But Elizabeth, lady of the Manor House, stubbornly insists that life must go on. Sitting Marsh residents depend on her to make sure things go smoothly. Which means everything from sorting out gossip to solving the occasional murder... In the thick of the Allied invasion, Elizabeth is sick with worry for Major Earl Monroe. To make matters worse, people and things keep going missing from the manor—namely Martin, the elderly butler, and ladies’ knickers from the washing line. Before Elizabeth can track either down, a man is found shot dead. Few will miss bad-tempered Clyde Morgan, and the police are ready to call it a suicide. But Elizabeth’s not so sure...

"Unmentionable? Sure. But I'll try to tell you anyway. The sludge in that tanker was the stuff of nightmares. My nightmares as it turned out. Some things you just can't talk about. Locked in the loo. Kissing a cold, cold kid. Being a little squirt. Burning your behind."--Back cover.

The Unmentionable History of the West is a fond romp through the underwear that men and women wore in days gone by. Think of corsets, navy blue bloomers, long underwear with its trap door and brassieres that could kill. Think also of the other unmentionables that came along with being sexual beings. Women had to hide their pregnancies, talk of birth control was illegal, seduction was a crime, prostitution likewise. There were so many silences, so many secrets about the private lives of men and women. Then along came the 1960s and the social revolution known as the women's movement. Suddenly, underwear was out, girdles were gone and women began wearing pants. What came first then . . . the women's movement or pants? The removal of restrictive underwear or the force that was Gloria Steinem? The Unmentionable History of the West tackles these questions seriously, but with a good dose of humour.

Unmentionables is about two pairs of lovers in the Civil War south. One couple is straight, white, and wealthy. The other couple is gay, black, and enslaved. Field hand Jimmy meets Cato, a house servant from a nearby plantation. Jimmy, who despises whites, mistakes Cato for a white man. But soon he learns that Cato is only half white. Cato is the illegitimate son of plantation owner Augustus Askew. With time, Jimmy's fascination with Cato grows into romantic love. Unmentionables is also the story of Dorothy Holland, whose parents own Jimmy. Dorothy does not want any man to control her life. The Play Of The Unmentionable written by Joseph Kosuth and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Art categories.

At the height of the controversy over government funding for "obscene" works of art, internationally renowned conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth created "The Brooklyn Museum Collection: The Play of the Unmentionable," an exhibit about censorship at The Brooklyn Museum. His installation, one of the best-attended, most widely reviewed (and most controversial) of the year, juxtaposed works of art from throughout history that had been deemed politically, religiously, or sexually objectionable, with statements about the role of art in society by writers as diverse as Oscar Wilde, Adolf Hitler, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Using artworks drawn from the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Museum, "The Play of the Unmentionable" showed graphically how public and institutional ideas of obscenity and artistic value have changed throughout history - and continue to change today. This handsome book documents the exhibit with twenty-one pages of color and more than a hundred duotone photographs, and is designed to recapture the installation's juxtapositions of artworks and texts. In a major essay, art historian David Freedburg offers a detailed analysis of the installation, setting it in both the context of America's "culture wars" of the late 1980s, and of Kosuth's career. The Brooklyn Museum's director, Robert Buck, and its creator of contemporary art, Charlotta Kotik, also add critical perspectives; and Kosuth himself articulately describes his objectives in an interview. The result is a book that both represents the work of a major contemporary artist and boldly steps into the middle of the most controversial arguments about art and culture in America today. -- from dust jacket.

Anthem written by Ayn Rand and has been published by Ayn Rand Institute Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-07 with Fiction categories.

About this Edition This Digital Student Edition of Ayn Rand's Anthem was created for teachers and students receiving free novels from the Ayn Rand Institute, and includes a historic Q&A with Ayn Rand that cannot be found in any other edition of Anthem. In this Q&A from 1979, Rand responds to questions about Anthem sent to her by a high school classroom. About Anthem Anthem is Ayn Rand’s “hymn to man’s ego.” It is the story of one man’s rebellion against a totalitarian, collectivist society. Equality 7-2521 is a young man who yearns to understand “the Science of Things.” But he lives in a bleak, dystopian future where independent thought is a crime and where science and technology have regressed to primitive levels. All expressions of individualism have been suppressed in the world of Anthem; personal possessions are nonexistent, individual preferences are condemned as sinful and romantic love is forbidden. Obedience to the collective is so deeply ingrained that the very word “I” has been erased from the language. In pursuit of his quest for knowledge, Equality 7-2521 struggles to answer the questions that burn within him — questions that ultimately lead him to uncover the mystery behind his society’s downfall and to find the key to a future of freedom and progress. Anthem anticipates the theme of Rand’s first best seller, The Fountainhead, which she stated as “individualism versus collectivism, not in politics, but in man’s soul.”

As weavers, garment workers, and peddlers, Syrian immigrants in the Americas fed the early twentieth-century transnational textile trade. These migrants and the commodities they produced—silk, linen, and cotton; lace and embroidery; undergarments and ready-wear clothing—moved along steamship routes from Beirut through Marseille and Madeira to New York City, New England, and Veracruz. As migrants and merchants crisscrossed the Atlantic in pursuit of work, Syrian textile manufacturing expanded across the hemisphere. Unmentionables offers a history of the global textile industry and the Syrians, Lebanese, and Palestinians who worked in it. Stacy Fahrenthold examines how Arab workers navigated processes of racialization, immigration restriction, and labor contestation. She writes women workers—the majority of Syrian garment workers—back into US labor history. She also situates the rise of Syrian American industrial elites, who exerted supply chain power to combat labor uprisings, resist unionization, and stake claim to the global textile industry. Critiquing the hegemony of the Syrian peddler in histories of this diaspora, Unmentionables introduces alternative narrators: union activists who led street demonstrations, women garment workers who shut down kimono factories, child laborers who threw snowballs at police, and the diasporic merchant capitalists who contended with all of them.

Once described as the invisible handicap, deafness remains a mystery to most Americans. From the silent film era to 1986, when deaf actress Marlee Matlin won an Oscar for her performance in Children of a Lesser God, Hollywood has reinforced stereotypical views of deafness and deaf people in nearly two hundred movies and television episodes--front flap.
