Antonovsky's book challenges the health care community to reassess its approach to health. He asserts that the focus for too long has been solely on illness and the treatment of specific disease, with little or no attention directed at the factors and conditions necessary for health. The author offers a way to evaluate the psychological, social, and cultural factors that relate to health and well-being. Antonovsky presents a model that he calls the ``sense of coherence'' (SOC), suggesting that the way people make sense of the world is a major factor in their health. He provides, as an appendix, a questionnaire for assessing the SOC for individuals to evaluate and predict how well they manage stress and stay healthy. This model was presented by Antonovsky in an earlier work, but this volume provides more detail on both the theoretical and research database for the SOC. Insight is provided on how SOC affects neuroendocrine and immunological processes and thus overall health. The conceptual framework presented in this book is useful and important. The writing style, however, is often cumbersome, making for difficult reading. In addition, the author assumes readers are familiar with his earlier work, Health, Stress and Coping (CH, Jan '80); readers not acquainted with its content will find it difficult to follow the ideas being presented. In spite of these shortcomings, the book sets an important direction for thought in the evolution of health promotion strategies.

In a pioneering departure from conventional medicine this startling new book, 'Unravelling the Mystery of Disease. The medical reform needed to cure the incurable ... a Kuhnian shift', urges that we move away from diagnosis as the way to tackle disease due to its very poor results. In its stead it suggests we embrace compelling findings from archaeology: that there are only four root causes of disease - and they all weaken immunity. This two-pronged rethink on disease is the brainchild of Deborah Manners BSc(Hons)DipEd, founder of the Food Intolerance Institute of Australia. Manners sees the global burden of disease - hundreds of millions afflicted with lifelong illness - as a consequence of misapplied science that demands medical reform.'Because', she says, 'medicine's quirky method for tackling sickness - diagnosis - is not useful for patients, leading them deeper into disease. The typical prognosis for chronic degenerative disease is continuous treatment, worsening illness and premature death. Healing is out of the question.''But if instead we were all to adopt a diet low in food toxins like caseins (from milk), glutens (from wheat) and others, disease incidence (new cases) would drop dramatically.'The book cites evidence that cancers, Parkinson's, diabetes, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, infertility and other conditions can be arrested, improved, prevented and in some cases reversed by avoiding food toxins. The new approach is captured in Manners-Xenos Theory which she develops as the book progresses. Certain poisons in common food staples have brought humanity to a crisis point. Because while archaeology reveals that disease was unknown to our Paleolithic forbears - today three in four of us die with two, three or more chronic conditions which continue to outwit medicine. The author, with a genetic blood disorder, discovered the link between food intolerance and disease through her own experience and research. Predicated on findings from hundreds of studies across five decades - the book deftly demystifies disease - arriving at what seems like an obvious-in-hindsight conclusion: that we have been looking at sickness the wrong way for centuries.

Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Development Disorder is an essential guide for parents with autistic children who hope to better understand and intervene with the disorder. When their nineteen-month-old son, Miles, was diagnosed with autism, Karyn Seroussi, a writer, and her husband, a scientist, fought back with the only weapons at their disposal: love and research. Consulting medical papers, surfing the Web, and networking with other parents, they traced the onset of their child's problems to an immune system breakdown that coincided with his vaccinations. As a result, his digestive system was unable to break down certain proteins, which in turn led to abnormal brain development. So Karyn and her husband got to work -- Karyn implementing their program at home while her husband tested his theories at the scientific lab where he worked. Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder is an inspiring and suspenseful chronicle of how one couple empowered themselves to challenge the medical establishment that promised no hope -- and found a cure for their child. Here are the explanations and treatments they so carefully researched and discovered, a wealth of crucial tools and hands-on information that can help other parents reverse the effects of autism and PDD, including step-by-step instructions for the removal of dairy and gluten from the diet, special recipes, and an explanation of the roles of the key players in autism research.

We are salutogenesis friends working in health promotion, who banded together to accomplish what none of us alone could manage. Writing this handbook has brought the editors and the chapter authors closer together, discussing and debating every detail related to this complex project, with its 57 chapters and 88 authors. Several chapters address salutogenesis in the context of Coronavirus. Also, many of the book's authors have turned attention to salutogenesis research connected to the pandemic. As this book attests, salutogenesis scholarship is thriving in several disciplinary and transdisciplinary fields. This development would induce a broad smile and a high degree of satisfaction to the field's founding theoretician, Aaron Antonovsky (1923-1994).
