Als Praktischer Arzt mit einem internistischen Hintergrund wie auch als Psychiater und Psychotherapeut, der Naturheilverfahren und traditionelle chinesische Medizin einbezieht, wurde dies dem Autor immer wieder nur zu klar. Moderne psychiatrische Strömungen, die sich in den psychiatrischen Weltkonferenzen der World Psychiatric Association (WPA) immer mehr zeigen, führen klar in diese Richtung. Einerseits gibt es mehr körperliche Ursachen für psychische Probleme als gedacht, und andererseits kann man über allgemeine Gesundheitssorge für den Menschen auch viel mehr für die psychische Gesundheit erreichen, als bisher vermutet. Außerdem zeigt sich aber auch, dass wir viele scheinbar angenehme Dinge unseres modernen Lifestyles kritisch hinterfragen müssen, wenn wir nicht noch weiter in eine Katastrophe schlittern wollen und die Erde durch Plastik bis hin zum Elektromagnetismus in eine Müllkippe verwandeln, auf der ein gesundes Überleben unmöglich sein wird. Das Dilemma einer gefährlichen Überregulierung und Überwachung steht jedoch am Horizont. Auf viele dieser spinnennetzartigen Verflechtungen soll hier auch eingegangen werden. Daher ist eine personenzentrierte, holistische und resiliente Betrachtung des Gesundheitskomplexes unter Einschluss der Quantenmedizin das Ziel.

Analysing the latest data on the environment-disease nexus and the devastating impact of environmental hazards and risks on global health, backed up by expert opinion, this report covers more than 130 diseases and injuries. The analysis shows that 23% of global deaths (and 26% of deaths among children under five) are due to modifiable environmental factors--and therefore can be prevented. Stroke, ischaemic heart disease, diarrhoea and cancers head the list. People in low-income countries bear the greatest disease burden, with the exception of noncommunicable diseases. The development of modern medicine is on a very steep trajectory upward--a rise that began only about a hundred years ago. This rise is certainly quantitative, but it is accompanied by qualitative changes in the way we understand and deliver healthcare. This book begins with a look at three recognized periods of medical development--from 1900 until World War II, from the war until about 1980, and the period since 1980. While the common response is to celebrate these developments, this book suggests that perhaps we should also be wary, especially of the qualitative changes. Since World War II, these medical developments have entered more and more areas of our lives. It is precisely this process of medicalization that should be critically examined. Since 1980 we have medicalized life itself. Drawing from medical sociology, the book examines four characteristics of contemporary Western health care: health as a system, risk as a means of understanding health, health as a commodity, and individual responsibility for health. Critical examination of these four tendencies in contemporary health care forms the core of the argument of this important book about the essence of biohealth and medical practice.
