American labour history is typically interpreted by scholars as a history of defeat. Hidden by this conventional wisdom are a handful of militant unions that did not follow the putative Congress of Industrial Organizations trajectory. Based on three years of ethnographic research, this book examines a union that organised itself to systematically challenge management's rule on the shopfloor: San Francisco's longshore union. American unionism looks quite different than conventional wisdom suggests when everyday union practices are observed. American labour's trajectory, this book argues, is neither inevitable nor determined; militant, democratic forms of unionism are possible in the United States; and collective bargaining does not automatically eliminate contests for workplace control. The contract is a bargain that reflects and reproduces fundamental disagreement; it states how production and conflict will proceed.

The subject-gamut of these poems is wide: it ranges from meditations on sex (as in the author's fiction) to meditations on American history and politics (black/white relations, draft dodging, presidential politics). The prevailing concern, however, is with tricks of memory, with moments in and out of time, distraction fits when past selves or past lives rise up to re-engulf the "present" person. These poems ring changes on Montaigne's idea of ondoyance, the flux of personality. They are ghost stories in the same way Henry James's works of fiction and of autobiography often are. Ghost stories too (or perhaps especially) in the substantial section of translations with which the volume concludes: the poet assumes or is haunted by the voices of others.

From one of the most innovative and acclaimed biblical commentators at work today, here is a revolutionary analysis of the intersection between religion and psychoanalysis in the stories of the men and women of the Bible. For centuries scholars and rabbis have wrestled with the biblical narrative, attempting to answer the questions that arise from a plain reading of the text. In The Murmuring Deep, Avivah Zornberg informs her literary analysis of the text with concepts drawn from Freud, Winnicott, Laplanche, and other psychoanalytic thinkers to give us a new understanding of the desires and motivations of the men and women whose stories form the basis of the Bible. Through close readings of the biblical and midrashic texts, Zornberg makes a powerful argument for the idea that the creators of the midrashic commentary, the medieval rabbinic commentators, and the Hassidic commentators were themselves on some level aware of the complex interplay between conscious and unconscious levels of experience and used this knowledge in their interpretations. In her analysis of the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah, Jonah, Abraham, Rebecca, Isaac, Joseph and his brothers, Ruth, and Esther–how they communicated with the world around them, with God, and with the various parts of their selves–Zornberg offers fascinating insights into the interaction between consciousness and unconsciousness. In discussing why God has to “seduce” Adam into entering the Garden of Eden or why Jonah thinks he can hide from God by getting on a ship, Zornberg enhances our appreciation of the Bible as the foundational text in our quest to understand what it means to be human.

A Black Ops agent seeking vengeance... And the secretive man who loves her. For three years, Amy Stuart has blamed herself for the death of her sister, and it’s caused an estrangement with her family. She vows to get revenge on the vicious drug lord. The Data Acquisition Group’s newest mission will put her right in the crosshairs of her nemesis. Hired by Hugh Bainbridge IV to discover how drugs are being smuggled into his mother’s charity, Amy vows to not only gather intelligence, but to kill the drug dealer who so brutally destroyed her family. Yet when she starts investigating, it’s Hugh who holds her captivated, not her quest for justice. A lawyer who wears sweats instead of suits, Hugh has carved out a new life for himself outside of the expectations of his father. Amy is just his type: smart, feisty, and lethally gorgeous. But can she handle all his secrets? As Amy gets closer to the cold-blooded murderer from her past, she’ll have to choose between revenge and love—for time is running out.

Deuteronomy 32:47 says the Pentateuch should not be 'an empty matter.' This new anthology from Beth Kissileff fills Genesis with meaning, gathering intellectuals and thinkers who use their professional knowledge to illuminate the Biblical text. These writers use insights from psychology, law, political science, literature, and other scholarly fields, to create an original constellation of modern Biblical readings, and receptions of Genesis: A scientist of appetite on Eve's eating behavior; law professors on contracts in Genesis, and on collective punishment; an anthropologist on the nature of human strife in the Cain and Abel story; political scientists on the nature of Biblical games, Abraham's resistance, and collective action. The highly distinguished contributors include Alan Dershowitz and Ruth Westheimer, the novelists Rebecca Newberger Goldstein and Dara Horn, critics Ilan Stavans and Sander Gilman, historian Russell Jacoby, poets Alicia Suskin Ostriker and Jacqueline Osherow, and food writer Joan Nathan.
