The Feringhees written by Elizabeth Hamilton and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-21 with History categories.

A stiff upper lip, steely eyes and a cold heart is often how the English imperialist is pictured in popular imagination. Drawing from memoirs, commentaries and family letters, Elizabeth Hamilton brings forth an alternative portrayal of her ancestors, Sir Robert Hamilton and Sir William Barton. Their careers in India are set against the momentous events of their times to present a different side of the colonialists of a quiet people, dedicated to the tradition of upholding the law and avoiding conflict. Volume I, The Proud Empire, traces the life of Sir Robert Hamilton, from the beginning of his career under the watchful eye of his father, up until his retirement. Occupying multiple roles such as the Resident of Indore and Agent to the Governor General in the Central Provinces, he is seen interacting with various prominent Indian figures such as the Rani of Jhansi, Tantya Tope and Nana Sahib. The picture of the arrogant imperialist fades away to be replaced by that of someone keen to make a difference to the society he was working in, who encourages good governance, mends ties in the midst of escalating tensions and must recover cities occupied by insurgents, all the while shadowed by the burden of great personal losses. Volume II, The Straight Race, tracks Sir William Barton’s career in the early twentieth century. Starting in the Punjab and the North-West Frontier, he later served as Resident in the well-administered states of Mysore and Hyderabad, where he stood up to the Nizam, doing his best to set the administration on a less corrupt footing. Retirement did not deter Sir William’s close interest in Indian affairs; he returned twice on tour as an advisor to electrical companies and travelled with a Ministry of Supply mission during the Second World War. With three books and many articles for newspapers and journals on the subject, India remained an integral part of his life.

A T Rt Nelmi Reg Ny written by Georg Lukács and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1983-01-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Georg Lukács (1885–1971) is now recognized as one of the most innovative and best-informed literary critics of the twentieth century. Trained in the German philosophic tradition of Kant, Hegel, and Marx, he escaped Nazi persecution by fleeing to the Soviet Union in 1933. There he faced a new set of problems: Stalinist dogmatism about literature and literary criticism. Maneuvering between the obstacles of censorship, he wrote and published his longest work of literary criticism, The Historical Novel, in 1937. Beginning with the novels of Sir Walter Scott, The Historical Novel documents the evolution of a genre that came to dominate European fiction in the years after Napoleon. The novel had reached a point at which it could be socially and politically critical as well as psychologically insightful. Lukács devotes his final chapter to the anti-Nazi fiction of Germany and Austria.

Modern business practice and scholarship have honed the laws of the leadership. To achieve success, you're supposed to - among other things - leverage your time, choose a strong team, and avoid unnecessary controversy. But what do you do when the laws of leadership collide with the teachings of Christ? What would it mean to reveal your true character to those you lead? What would it take for you to take an honest look at yourself and ask, "Am I leading from my mission … or my shadow mission?" Using stories from their own lives and ministries, Bill Hybels, John Ortberg, and Dan Allender illustrate how the laws of leadership sometimes crash head-on into the demands of discipleship, and how the decisions you make at these crossroads could affect not only you, but the destiny of those you lead. The Call to Lead includesthe previous releases from the Leadership Library series: When Leadership and Discipleship Collide, by Bill Hybels, Overcoming Your Shadow Mission, by John Ortberg, and Leading Character from Dan Allender.

A Calming Effect written by Anna Bright and has been published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-30 with Religion categories.

A Calming Effect is a compilation of my first year of articles, one for each week, that I wrote for a column in one of my local newspapers. My topics range from mine and others' personal experiences, to those of life in general. Each article is supported by one or more scriptures, and most of them include an illustration to further explain the main points. The overall purpose, however, is to teach, inspire, and motivate others to stay encouraged in the Lord because everything will be all right in God's time. During the time that I was writing this column, so many of my readers motivated and encouraged me to continue because they looked forward to my weekly articles. Many others have been led to Christ/recommitted their lives to Christ as a result. Each week, I relied on God to lead me with what He wanted me to tell His people. I chose the title A Calming Effect because when I am around God's creation of water, it brings a peaceful calm over me that is indescribable. When I need a hefty boost of encouragement, my husband and I head to the ocean! The feel of the cool breeze from the water and the beauty of it just mesmerize me. When I look at the ocean, I always say, "How can anyone say there is no God!" Only God could create such a beautiful phenomenon, with such a calming effect. Therefore, my desire is that my weekly devotionals in this book will have a calming effect on those who read them. Each week I ended my articles with this one-liner: "Have a wonderfully blessed week, and never leave home without Him!" This collection of inspirational devotionals ends with an epilogue: "Love Transcends Hate: A Personal Perspective on the Emanuel 9 Massacre." This tragic event shook the globe. Eyes around the world were on Charleston, South Carolina. What dignity displayed in the face of such horrific adversity! I just had to share with the world my emotions and my take on such a tragedy, never to be forgotten.
