Over the last 50 years, the ultras have become the most widespread, outspoken and spectacular form of football fandom across the globe. Die Ultras, eine Bewegung der Fankultur, welche Mitte der 1990er Jahre aus Italien nach Deutschland schwappte, sind in der heutigen Zeit nicht mehr aus den Stadien wegzudenken. Zahlreiche Choreografien, eigene jugendclubähnliche Räumlichkeiten, riesige Schwenkfahnen, aber auch gewalttätige Auseinandersetzungen sind ein Teil dieser Bewegung. Die gängige Literatur ist sich in den meisten Fällen nicht einig, ob es sich bei der Ultrabewegung um eine Jugendbewegung, Jugendkultur oder eine eigenständige Subkultur handelt. Um dies zu klären, beschäftigt sich die folgende Studie mit der Frage, ob die Ultrabewegung eine eigenständige Subkultur darstellt. Hierzu wird im ersten Teil die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Fankultur in Deutschland von den Anfängen des Zuschauersports bis hin zur heutigen Ultrabewegung genauer beleuchtet. Um diese zu verstehen, wird auch ein nötiger Exkurs nach Italien, dem Mutterland der Ultrabewegung, durchgeführt. Im zweiten Teil der Studie kommen in einer qualitativen Befragung Mitglieder diverser Ultragruppierungen selbst zu Wort. Dies ist notwendig, um deren Auffassung der Ultrakultur dokumentieren zu können und abschließend den Versuch zu unternehmen, die Frage nach subkulturellen Zügen der Ultrabewegung zu klären.
