Wei Yen explores how differences in world views between Eastern and Western thought and culture have on management and leadership behaviors. In The Geography of Thought Richard Nisbett showed how the thought and culture of the East is rooted in Chinese Confucian ideals while that of the West goes back to the early Greeks. In From Great Wall to Wall Street, Wei Yen explores how these differences impact today’s leadership and management practices. He delves deeply into the two cultures and their philosophical roots, and explains why there can exist significant misunderstandings between the two camps. Yen was born in China, raised in Hong Kong, educated both there and in the US and then spent half his working life in the US and half in Asia. Durch die Internationalisierung nehmen auch die Herausforderungen in der Umsetzung der Projekte zu. Ein kompetenter Umgang mit diesen Problemstellungen entscheidet letztendlich über Erfolg oder Misserfolg eines Projektes. Eine der größten Herausforderungen besteht in den Unterschiedlichkeiten in der jeweiligen Arbeitskultur, welches sich in der Komplexität der Regeln und Normen der Kultur äußert und zumeist unbewusst bleibt. Einen wesentlichen Faktor für einen internationalen Projekterfolg und damit der Handhabung der kulturellen Unterschiede stellt die interkulturelle Kompetenz des Projektleiters dar. Die Arbeit setzt sich mit der Thematik der interkulturellen Kompetenz als wesentliche Schlüsselkomponente für die erfolgreiche Abwicklung von Projekten am Beispiel China auseinander. Zur Beantwortung der zentralen Forschungsfrage wurde eine qualitative empirische Untersuchung durchgeführt. Auf der Grundlage eines halbstandardisierten Interviews wurden insgesamt 6 Projektleiter aus unterschiedlichen Wirtschaftsbereichen mit Projekterfahrung von mehreren Jahren in China befragt. Untersucht wurden deren subjektive Erfahrungen im Umgang mit den kulturellen Unterschieden in China und welche Fähigkeiten erforderlich sind, um sich in verschiedenen Kontextsituationen angemessen zu verhalten. Die inhaltsanalytische Auswertung nach Mayring zeigt, dass die Projektmanager hohen Anforderungen im Umgang mit den kulturellen Unterschieden in China ausgesetzt sind und interkulturelle Kompetenz zur Bewältigung dieser Unterschiede benötigen. Das Vorhanden-sein von Wissen und das Verständnis der chinesischen Kultur verleiht dem Projektleiter die Kompetenz, verhaltensangepasst mit den chinesischen Teammitgliedern interagieren und damit auch erfolgreich in der Abwicklung von Projekten sein zu können.
